The annual dance productions presented by the Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy (LAMTA) have earned a reputation as highlights on Cape Town's performing arts calendar, and KILLER QUEEN continues that tradition in spectacular style. Conceived and directed by Anton Luitingh and Duane Alexander , this vibrant production pays tribute to one of the most iconic bands in music history while showcasing the extraordinary talents of LAMTA's students.
As a lifelong admirer of Queen's music, I arrived with high expectations, and Killer Queen did not disappoint. From the opening moments, the production captures the energy, theatricality and larger-than-life spirit that made Queen and Freddie Mercury legendary.
Performed by LAMTA's exceptionally talented dancers and singers, the show is packed with fresh, exciting choreography that breathes new life into familiar songs. The students throw themselves into every number with commitment and enthusiasm, and their enjoyment is infectious. This is especially evident in the more upbeat songs, where an added driving beat gives several classics a contemporary edge and creates an irresistible energy that sweeps through the theatre.
The production cleverly weaves elements of Freddie Mercury 's story into the performance through video projections displayed on a screen at the back of the stage. These visual moments provide historical context and remind audiences of the remarkable journey of four ambitious musicians who rose to become one of the most influential bands in popular music.
Visually, KILLER QUEEN is a feast. The costumes are wonderfully colourful, imaginative and versatile, perfectly complementing the changing moods of the music. Equally impressive is the lighting design, which transforms the stage from intimate moments to full-scale rock-concert excitement with remarkable flair.
One of the production's greatest strengths is its diverse range of choreographic styles. With contributions from several accomplished choreographers, each number brings a fresh perspective to Queen's legendary catalogue. Among the many standout moments, the work of Jared Schaedler particularly caught my attention. His choreography feels bold, contemporary and powerful, incorporating influences that evoke hip-hop and breakdancing while remaining perfectly suited to the music. His numbers crackle with energy and showcase the dancers' athleticism and skill.
Featuring favourites such as We Will Rock You , Somebody to Love , The Show Must Go On and We Are the Champions , KILLER QUEEN successfully balances nostalgia with innovation. Rather than simply reproducing familiar songs, the production reimagines them through expressive movement, dynamic staging and youthful creativity.
KILLER QUEEN is more than a dance showcase; it is a joyful celebration of Queen's enduring legacy and a testament to the remarkable talent being nurtured at LAMTA. Whether you're a devoted Queen fan or simply appreciate outstanding dance theatre, this exhilarating production is guaranteed to leave you entertained, uplifted and humming the songs long after the final curtain call.
