The ending of The Boroughs explained: do the team manage to bring down Mother?
For most of the season, the residents of the retirement community think Mother is the monster behind the mysterious deaths and attacks. By the final episodes, they have discovered that underground creatures are feeding on elderly residents, while The Boroughs CEOs Blaine and Anneliese Shaw (Seth Numrich and Alice Kremelberg) use the creatures’ blood to maintain eternal youth.
However, Sam (Alfred Molina) learns through psychic visions of his dead wife Lilly – and from another patient in The Manor – that Mother is not the villain, but a captive creature the Shaws have exploited for decades, forcing her offspring to feed on residents so they can harvest restorative fluid from her blood.
In the final episode, Wally (Denis O’Hare) smuggles Mother out of the lab, while Paz and Renee (Carlos Miranda and Geena Davis) free her offspring. When the Shaws corner Sam, Claire (Jena Malone) and Wally at Sam’s house, Sam and Claire activate a wall of old televisions whose light frequency destabilises the creatures, disintegrating Anneliese and weakening Blaine.
Mother later heals the badly injured Judy (Alfre Woodard), reunites with her offspring in the cave, and unleashes a massive energy blast that kills both herself and Blaine. Sam survives and later celebrates with his family and friends.
