007 First Light Sequel Confirmed, May See Significant Changes

After selling more than a million copies in 24 hours, Amazon has confirmed a 007 First Light sequel will happen – but it might look very different.

Hitman developers IO Interactive started work on 007 First Light in 2020 after getting the green light from long-serving franchise custodians Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson. However, while the game was being made, Broccoli and Wilson gave creative control of all things James Bond to Amazon as part of a £790million deal .

IO Interactive’s self-published Bond game 007 First Light was released last week. As well as racking up some very positive reviews, the game shifted more than 1.5million copies in its first 24 hours.

In a new interview with Polygon , head of Amazon Games Jeff Gattis confirmed that sequels will happen but they “theoretically [will be done by] Amazon Game Studios.”

“We did not [make First Light ]. We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done,” he added.

“We do see this continued integration of video and movies and video games, where that line is becoming much more blurry. We think that’s a real opportunity for us to create IP that extends — or kind of expands upon — TV shows and movies. So there’ll be a Tomb Raider TV show on Prime Video that’ll go alongside the games. There’s a lot of things we have in the works on new games that’ll relate to Prime Video IP.”

A lot of fans are already worried about what that means for the future of Bond games. “Imagine having the golden goose and deciding it’s better to use a regular goose that may not even be able to lay eggs,” said one Reddit user. “Amazon Game Studios has cancelled more games than they’ve released,” added another. “If IO isn’t making the next one, what’s the fucking point in making another one,” asked one X user.

In other news, God Of War  game developers have said the franchise will return to Kratos’ story after upcoming spin-off  Laufey  was revealed earlier this week.
