Inspired by Lepage's own childhood memories, 887 is a deeply personal exploration of memory, identity and the stories we carry with us. Named after the address of the apartment building where he grew up, the work blends autobiographical storytelling with theatrical innovation to examine how memory shapes both the individual and the collective experience.
Part theatrical performance, part intimate reflection, 887 unfolds as Lepage revisits fragments of his past while grappling with the elusive nature of memory itself. Why do we remember a childhood phone number yet forget the one we use today? How does a song from decades ago remain permanently embedded in our minds while the name of a loved one slips away? Through these questions, Lepage invites audiences into a layered meditation on remembrance, loss and the passage of time.
The production also explores the broader cultural and historical dimensions of memory, drawing attention to commemorative markers-names of streets, monuments and public spaces-that quietly shape our shared consciousness. At the same time, 887 reflects on oblivion and the unconscious, asking what happens as memories fade and are increasingly replaced by digital storage and virtual archives.
At its core, 887 examines the enduring relevance of theatre in an age defined by data and technology. Through his singular storytelling approach, Lepage reveals the vulnerability of the actor, who must not only remember text, but also carry the weight of personal history and collective memory on stage.
"887 is one of my most personal works," says Lepage. "It began as an exploration of my own childhood, but it quickly grew into a reflection on how memory defines who we are, both individually and collectively. Returning to this piece after so many years offers a new perspective shaped by time and experience."
"I am proud to have not only a wonderful professional relationship with Mr. Lepage, but also a personal connection that has grown over many collaborations, including The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Denmark in cities around the world," said producer Svetlana Dvoretsky, founder of Show One Productions. "887 is a profound, deeply personal and moving work, and I look forward to inviting new audiences to experience it, while giving those who have seen it before the opportunity to revisit the piece with fresh eyes and at a different moment in their lives."
Since its premiere, 887 has received widespread critical acclaim and numerous prestigious honors, including the Prix de la critique (Montreal) and multiple international theatre awards, further cementing its status as one of Robert Lepage 's most iconic and celebrated works.
Hailed for its inventive staging and emotional depth, 887 showcases Lepage's signature fusion of multimedia, storytelling and design. The production's intricate visual language and seamless integration of technology transform the stage into a living archive of memory, where past and present coexist in real time.
