Apple’s big push into AI includes adding cameras to its wildly popular AirPods earbuds, Bloomberg reports.

According to Apple insider Mark Gurman, the company has reached the late stages of development with the new AirPods. These cameras will capture low-resolution visual information to “act as eyes for the Siri digital assistant” rather than being used to take photos or video. Located in both the left and right earbuds, the cameras will necessitate a slight design change, requiring longer stems compared to the AirPods Pro 3 .

While Apple apparently planned to launch the new AirPods in the first half of 2026, the release was pushed back pending the completion of an improved Siri. However, testers within the company are reportedly “actively using prototypes” in the design validation test stage, which is one step before early mass production.

Apple envisions that the new hardware could be used to answer questions about a user’s surroundings, such as giving them suggestions for what to cook for dinner based on food ingredients at hand. Other uses could be giving a reminder based on what the camera sees, or improved turn-by-turn directions referencing specific landmarks.

To address privacy concerns about being filmed without consent, the AirPods feature a built-in small LED light that will turn on when “visual data is being fed into the cloud.”

These new AirPods — which have reportedly been in development for four years — are just one part of the AI hardware suite Apple has in the pipeline. The Cupertino company has also been developing smart glasses and a camera-equipped pendant that could be released as early as next year, though the AirPods are further along.

Unlike the Apple Vision Pro interface, neither the new AirPods nor the Apple glasses are expected to support hand-gesture control.

While these products put Apple in direct competition with Meta’s AI glasses, their success hinges on an improvement to Siri. An upgraded version of the assistant powered by Google Gemini is now on track for September, according to Gurman.

The AI-powered Siri upgrade has been delayed long enough to trigger a recent class action lawsuit seeking a $250 million in damages.

In the meantime, the AirPods Pro 3 remain one of Apple’s best-selling products and are currently available for $199.99 . See all the best AirPods deals available right now.
