Kidjo and NDour are two of Africa's best-known artists. Kidjo has been one of the leading figures in global music for more than 40 years and has become renowned for merging the West African traditions of her childhood with American R&B, funk and jazz, alongside influences from Europe and Latin America. NDour, meanwhile, has spent over 30 years mixing the country's traditional dance music called mbalax with everything from Cuban rumba to hip-hop, jazz and soul, NDour's prolific output sings of Africa's identity, heritage and hopes, often with a political edge.
The Royal Albert Hall show will be the only UK performance held on the Chimes of Freedom tour. The duo will also visit France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Belgium across March and April 2027.
Speaking about the collaboration, Angélique Kidjo said, “Youssou's voice and music have always been a source of inspiration for me. We often found ourselves singing a song or two together on stage, and it was always magical. Being able to create an entire programme together is an extraordinary opportunity for me.”
Youssou NDour said, “I am very happy to be able to go on tour with my sister Angélique Kidjo. We have often dreamed of doing this, but our respective schedules have not allowed it until now. Now it's happening, and we will kick off this series of concerts in March 2027. We will work hand in hand on our most evocative songs for our audience... I can't wait to get started.”
Matt Todd, Director of Programming at the Royal Albert Hall, said, “It is a real privilege for us to be hosting Angélique's and Youssou's show here at the Hall next year. They have both achieved so much throughout their respective careers in music, through community awareness and charitable endeavours, so to be able to celebrate their work together is a truly special occasion. We've been fortunate enough to see Youssou and Angélique onstage together in 2023, but to have the two of them performing a whole concert will be an incredibly exciting night for everyone.”
Angélique Kidjo's music is known for its powerful energy and joyful spirit, earning her numerous awards, including the 2023 Polar Music Prize, several Grammy Awards (including Best Global Music Album for Mother Nature in 2021), and a place on Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People.
A UNICEF and OXFAM Goodwill Ambassador, Kidjo has also appeared at the Hall three times before – at the 2019 BBC Proms, at a 2008 Stars of Africa fundraising concert and most recently in 2023 as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival to celebrate her 40th anniversary as an artist. She has also performed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in July 2021, and collaborated with high-profile artists throughout her career, such as Burna Boy, Philip Glass , Sting, Carlos Santana , Alicia Keys , Joss Stone and Peter Gabriel, among many others.
For 30 years, Youssou NDour has been a mesmerising beacon within African music. His voice both promotes the ancient griot traditions of Senegal in a fresh light while also carrying strident political and social messages across Africa to the wider world. Mixing the country's traditional dance music called mbalax with everything from Cuban rumba to hip-hop, jazz and soul, NDour's prolific output sings of Africa's identity, heritage and hopes, often with a political edge.
