Five-time Grammy-winning Beninese music legend Angélique Kidjo joins the Orchestra onstage for the first time for a performance of her new African Symphony (May 15), featuring orchestral interpretations of music by icons such as Fela Kuti and Miriam Makeba , along with hot hits by Burna Boy, Rema, and other contemporary artists. Highly distinguished UK Master of the King's Music, Errollyn Wallen, whose Violin Concerto had its world premiere here in 2024, returns to present another new work co-commissioned by the Calgary Phil. That piece will be premiered as part of the program for A Sunrise Odyssey (May 7 + 8). It is one of two concerts next season led by Principal Guest Conductor — and Grammy Award winner in her own right — Karen Kamensek (the other being Tchaikovsky's Sixth: The Final Symphony, November 6 + 7).
Other delights include Dreams of Bollywood (October 17), the Orchestra's very first exploration of the South Asian musical sensation, featuring the extraordinary Veils of Bollywood Dance Company. And, having already helmed an 80s dance party for the ages in 2023/2024, conductor Stuart Chafetz returns for the Orchestra's first revue of Gen X's biggest bangers at Bitter Sweet Symphony: The Best of the 90s (May 28 + 29). The timelessness and continued relevance of great music is revealed throughout 2026/2027. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, still a much-needed musical vision for a unified humanity, serves as the centrepiece of Bergmann + Beethoven (March 20), which also includes four contemporary responses to the great composer's works — commissioned by the Calgary Phil to celebrate his 250th birthday in 2020. Making the evening even more momentous is conductor Rune Bergmann's first return to the Jack Singer podium since concluding his tenure as Calgary Phil Music Director in 2025. Equally timely are the works featured in Symphonic Epics: Dvořák and Janáček (January 22 + 23). Natalia Ponomarchuk, Chief Conductor of the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra, leads the Calgary Phil in exploring themes of resistance in the face of oppression.
The Calgary Phil's vision to make orchestral music accessible to everyone is also reflected in its many offerings for families. Highlights from the next Symphony Sundays for Kids series include:
Whether you have a young one in tow or are simply young at heart, you'll be on the edge of your seat at this season's fun film concerts: How To Train Your Dragon 2 in Concert (September 4+5), Disney's Moana Live-to-Film Concert (October 9 + 10), How the Grinch Stole Christmas in Concert (November 27 + 28), and Jurassic Park in Concert (May 21 + 22). And, once again, all of Calgary is invited to Prince's Island for another free Phil in the Park (September 13), which is fast becoming a can't-miss annual tradition — over 10,000 music lovers from across the city attended the 2025/2026 iteration.
The 2026/2027 Season will feature 71 concerts across Calgary. The Orchestra returns to its home at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on September 11 with Dolly Parton 's Threads: My Songs in Symphony, a multimedia experience featuring Dolly narrating on the big screen. A bountiful selection of Pops and Specials follow, celebrating Beyoncé, Billy Joel , and the Bee Gees, as well as iconic film composers John Williams (The Music of John Williams , September 25 + 26) and Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Soundtracks: The Music of Studio Ghibli, January 30). The latter is presented in partnership with One Yellow Rabbit for the 2027 High Performance Rodeo.
More moments from the classical canon are hardly amiss, with a dazzling range of soloists from innovative violinist Maria Ioudenitch for Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 as part of Mozart + Mahler (November 20+ 21) to Canadian star pianist Angela Cheng, performing Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2 as part of Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances (March 6). Other incredible guests from across a wide array of styles and genres include acclaimed pianists Inon Barnatan and Stewart Goodyear, powerhouse vocalists Capathia Jenkins , Tony DeSare , and Arielle Jacobs , singer-songwriter Celeigh Cardinal, and rising star cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia, to name a few, along with turns in the spotlight for Calgary Phil Concertmaster Diana Cohen and Principal Harp Emily Melendes. The Bella Concert Hall will be home once again to the popular Baroque series, including a collaboration with Early Music Voices (October 23).
In addition to Kamensek, Bergmann, Ponomarchuk, and Chafetz, the Orchestra will be led by an amazing roster of dynamic conductors such as Juliane Gallant, Naomi Woo, Steve Hackman, Leslie Suganandarajah, and Roderick Cox, among many others.
The Orchestra also presents lively Education Concerts, which welcome thousands of students to the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Seniors, students, and other groups can experience a behind-the-scenes Open Rehearsal for select concerts to discover the time and dedication it takes to prepare for a performance.
“We reckon everyone will be ‘tickled pink' by this spectacular 2026/2027 Season," says Marc Stevens, President + CEO of the Calgary Philharmonic. “We will sing along to Jolene and other timeless hits at Dolly Parton 's Threads, become mesmerized by the virtuosity of pianist Stewart Goodyear and scores of other enthralling guest soloists, and dance joyously to the incomparable Angélique Kidjo.
The Calgary Philharmonic is thrilled to announce that National Bank has renewed its Season Sponsorship for 2026/2027, and we thank them for their significant and invaluable support. The season is also made possible through the support of core funders, including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Canada Council for the Arts, Prairies Economic Development Canada, and Calgary Arts Development.
