Charli XCX Delivers on “Rock Music” Promise with New Single
Charli XCX’s new single features the chorus, “I think the dance floor is dead / So now we’re making rock music,” a direct reference to her quote in British Vogue.

Charli XCX teased she would be making rock music on her new album, and now here she is literally doing just that on her new single, which is titled “Rock Music.” Mind you, this is Charli XCX’s take on rock music, so it’s still very her.
Co-produced by A.G. Cook, the song is guitar-forward but processed through lots of glitchy digital filters and dirty production. And it turns out that quote to British Vogue — “I think the dance floor is dead / So now we’re making rock music” — is actually the chorus of the song. “I’m really banging my head,” Charli sings. “I’m really hurting my neck / The nerve damage is real / but it’s the only way to feel something / hurt yourself / jump off the stage / I hope they catch you today / But if they don’t it’s okay.”
The video for “Rock Music,” directed by Aidan Zamiri, features mosh pits, stage diving, Times Square, grimy apartments, and lots and lots and lots of cigarettes. Watch below.
