The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) has announced that Emmy, Tony, 2x Grammy Award-winning and 3x Academy Award nominated Cynthia Erivo has been appointed Artist in Residence: Tutor in Vocal Practice.
Cynthia's appointment introduces a contemporary approach to vocal technique within RADA's dramatic training, bringing new understanding of how voice operates in current performance contexts. Alongside this, it supports a broader and more demanding engagement with musical vocabulary, repertoire and stylistic literacy. As Tutor in Vocal Practice, Cynthia will work directly with students, explore contemporary vocal technique and stylistic and interpretative work, provide guidance on industry standards and practices, and lead an annual, week-long masterclass for third-year students that enables highly individualised development and encourages them to discover their own authentic sound and expressive freedom. Cynthia's work with RADA will extend its specialist singing training for actors, reinforcing the integration of vocal, emotional and interpretative work as students prepare to enter the profession.
Her appointment as Resident Artist: Tutor in Vocal Practice provides a formal structure for her commitment to next-generation artists, which includes scholarships at University of Oxford and University of Southern California School of Dramatic Arts.
Cynthia has long helped shape a contemporary approach to voice in drama, emphasising clarity, immediacy and a direct connection between audience and story. Trained as an actor at RADA, she has led singing masterclasses with students here since 2015, serving as Vice President since 2024.
Cynthia Erivo said, "To tell stories through song is to be fearless. As a teacher and mentor, my role is to bring out what each individual has inside, helping find the depth of what they can offer to the world. I am excited to shape the way we approach this in RADA's future training."
Helen Slater , Interim Principal and Managing Director of RADA Business, said, "Cynthia challenges RADA and our students to be braver, more curious and more truthful in our work. Her residency deepens RADA's tradition of vocal practice as an analytical, aesthetically demanding centre of gravity within actor training. And as always, she offers students inspiration, rigour and a powerful living model of craft at the highest level."
