Set in a richly detailed Rococo world, the opera follows the Marschallin, who spends a romantic evening with her young lover Octavian before their idyll is interrupted by Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau. Ochs asks the Marschallin to recommend a suitable bearer of the traditional silver rose for his fiancée Sophie, daughter of the wealthy Faninal. The Marschallin selects Octavian for the task, setting in motion a bittersweet story of love, longing, and sacrifice as Octavian and Sophie fall for one another and the Marschallin comes to terms with the passing of time.
The production first premiered at the Haus am Ring on April 13, 1968, under the baton of Leonard Bernstein , with Christa Ludwig as the Marschallin and Walter Berry as Ochs. Director Otto Schenk personally supervised the revival of the production in 2010, alongside stage designs by Rudolf Heinrich.
Speaking about the production, Schenk reflected: “Everything I invent in a production, I invent thanks to those with whom I am allowed to work. Whereby Der Rosenkavalier is a very ‘given’ work. Much is predetermined by the music and text and only needs to be reproduced.”
Musically, the score is shaped by three distinct elements: extended parlando passages, sweeping lyrical ensembles and solos, and the famous waltzes associated with Baron Ochs. These musical “spheres” intertwine throughout the opera, creating the lush and emotionally layered sound world for which Strauss’s work is celebrated.
