Award-winning Emerging Artists Theatre (EAT), which has served theatre and dance companies throughout the NYC tri-state area for the past 33 years, is seeking funding for a building for a permanent home.

Over the last three decades, EAT has produced and developed new work at both the Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway levels. Now, the company is seeking the support of visionary philanthropists, major donors, foundations, and cultural investors to help build this unique, groundbreaking center.

Since its inception, EAT has operated from a series of short- and long-term rental spaces, managing and programming theatres throughout New York City. The company's last permanent theatre home was the former Mint Theater space at 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue, which EAT operated until the building was converted into condominiums in 2006. Since then, the company has relied on rented venues for its productions and festivals. Like many small arts organizations, EAT has experienced firsthand the steady disappearance of affordable performance spaces, a challenge that continues to threaten the sustainability of New York City's smaller theatre and dance companies.

Small theatre venues across New York City have steadily declined over the past several decades, often being purchased by real estate developers and converted into residential properties. The situation worsened dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving many independent theatre and dance companies without stable, affordable homes. Small theatres have become an endangered cultural resource in New York City.

On June 2, the company will launch an ambitious initiative to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the next generation of diverse artists by raising funds to purchase and renovate a building that will become ARTCOOP.

For the past 33 years, Emerging Artists Theatre-along with countless other independent arts organizations-has operated without a theatre to call its own. The company is searching for funding to refurbish an existing building that could house four 99-seat theatres, rehearsal studios, and shared creative spaces under one roof.

Imagine being part of the creation of a landmark performing arts center that ensures playwrights, choreographers, composers, librettists, and solo artists will always have a place to develop and share their work. Imagine helping preserve a vital piece of New York City's cultural future while creating a lasting legacy of support for generations of artists. Naming opportunities throughout the facility would recognize those whose generosity and vision helped make this dream a reality.

EAT is calling upon its extended community of artists, audiences, supporters, and advocates to help identify potential philanthropic partners and investors. Whether through a personal introduction, a professional connection, a foundation relationship, or a corporate contact, a single connection could help secure the future of independent theatre and dance in New York City.

The proposed facility would not only provide a permanent home for EAT, but also serve 15 to 20 diverse theatre and dance companies with annual budgets under $500,000, helping create a lasting foundation for Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theatre in New York City.

ARTCOOP would become a vital cultural hub dedicated to supporting emerging artists, fostering collaboration, and preserving accessible performance space for future generations of theatre-makers.
