Emmeline Downie will be bringing her debut one-woman show Gail to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August. Performances will run 5th - 30th August (not 17th).

But who is Gail Summerfield? Well, she's 54 years young, she's a full-time mum to her son who rarely speaks to her and, in an hour's time, she'll be a qualified Life Coach. She's ready to impart her wisdom with the world, even if the world doesn't particularly want it.

Gail is a satirical character comedy show that finally gives a platform to a rarely heard voice in the comedy theatre space: a Middle England divorcée and mother from Milton Keynes. It's a wry look at the self-disenfranchised of our society, identity, and what happens when people feel like they aren't being heard.

Speaking of bringing her first solo show to the Edinburgh Fringe festival, Emmeline Downie says: "I'm so excited to be debuting at the Edinburgh Fringe with Gail. I'm delving into what makes a Karen a Karen (or, in this case, a Gail) and I hope it resonates with anyone who knows and loves a complicated middle-aged woman."

Gail Summerfield says: "To be completely candid, I don't usually play rooms as small as the Pleasance Courtyard Attic but I am nothing if not tenacious in the face of adversity. Come and spend 55 minutes in my alluring company where - knowing me - I'll harp on about something or other and it will end up being immensely profound. Sod's law!"

Emmeline Downie is a comedian, actor and writer performing across the UK comedy circuit. In 2025 she performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as part of Brainsluts. She will appear in Channel 4's new sitcom It Gets Worse, written by Leo Reich and arriving later this year.

Gail is directed by writer, actor and comedian Leo Reich with dramaturgy by Joz Norris.
