First new Spyro game teases grander plans, says ‘A Realm Beyond’ boss

The first new Spyro The Dragon game in more than 18 years was announced earlier this week – and more could be on the way.

Announced at the Xbox Summer Games Showcase, Spyro: A Realm Beyond will launch early next year for Nintendo Switch 2 , Xbox Series X/S , PlayStation 5 and PC .

“Get ready for Spyro’s bold new adventure. Take flight in a brand-new journey through a strange and wondrous realm,” reads a description of A Realm Beyond . “When Spyro finds himself stranded, his journey to discover a way home is interrupted by the arrival of a vicious invading force known as the Scavs. Spyro must make new allies and rise to protect this realm before it’s changed forever. Feel the freedom of flight as you soar above vibrant landscapes, weave between treetops, dive off massive landmarks and wing your way through this new realm in Spyro’s boldest evolution yet.”

According to Toys For Bob studio head Paul Yan, their goal for A Realm Beyond was to tap into the nostalgia of Spyro while also pushing the franchise forward in a meaningful way. “Our goal is that we want Spyro to live on for a long time. We want not just one new game, but many new games. We hope that this is the first of many,” Yan said in an interview with GamesRadar+ .

“So we’re going to have to take some risks,” he continued. “We’re going to have to move into new territory. Our goal is to make sure that that evolution is always speaking to something that is authentic and reverential to building on the foundation of what is truly Spyro, and then we’ll take some leaps.”

A Realm Beyond is the first new Spyro game since 2008’s Dawn Of The Dragon and follows on from the Reignited Trilogy , which brought the first three games to modern consoles in 2018.

In other news, Nintendo has confirmed that a reimagined version of  The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time will launch later this year – and fans are already losing their minds over the “reborn” take on the classic .
