The rock giants appeared on the late night chat show following the release of their new LP ‘ Your Favorite Toy ’, which dropped last month.

‘Window’ was the third song to feature on the tracklist, and the memorable live performance on ‘Colbert’ saw the band backed by warm yellow lighting as frontman Dave Grohl crooned: “ Dancing in the wind, rainy on the weekend/ Thunder in the clouds, thunder in the clouds/ Lately I don’t hear a sound ”, building towards the ‘70s-inspired chorus: “ Then I saw your face/ there in the window/ You were a window cleaner letting in the sun ”.

While on the show, the frontman also sat down with Colbert to discuss the album and recall how Foos’ 12th album arrived shortly before the debut album from his daughter Violet .

Recalling the advice he shared with her, Grohl said: “The reward has to be the music itself. You work hard and you want to be successful and you want to be the best that you can be… But at the end of the day the most important thing is your love of music and that you love the music that you’re making.”

“As I told Violet, I want her to really appreciate these early experience,” he continued. “Don’t wish any of this away and don’t get too ahead of yourself. Be in the moment right now. I really want her to appreciate this now part. Because this now part does become the foundation of everything that comes next.”

Also on the chat show, the rock legend revealed that he “didn’t know what to do” and debated whether or not to continue making music after Nirvana ended when Kurt Cobain died in 1994.

“I didn’t know if I wanted to continue playing music. It made me sad to think of playing in another band. Losing Nirvana, losing Kurt, was a really dark, emotional experience,” he shared.

He also added that he made the decision to form a new band after going to Ireland to “disappear” for a while, and seeing someone wearing a shirt with Cobain’s face on it.

“I thought, ‘OK, this is the universe telling me to continue… I need to keep going. I have so much reverence and respect for the past, but I need to have a future.’ And that’s kind of where it began.”

NME gave the new record three-and-a-half stars in a review which read : “Vocally, Grohl has rediscovered his roar, but lyricism has never been his strongest suit, and much of it here is throwaway; those looking for signs of where his head is at after his infidelity scandal two years ago will be largely disappointed.

“But a fascinating exception is ‘Child Actor’, on which Grohl – who’s come to relish the spotlight after 30 years as the Foos’ frontman – unflinchingly examines his need for validation; it is the sound of somebody who has knocked themselves off their own perch searching for answers in the mirror.

“‘Your Favorite Toy’ is a few more tracks of that depth away from being the most vital Foo Fighters record since 1997’s ‘The Colour and the Shape’. For now, at least, they have remembered that no-frills punk, played fast and loud, suits them much better than middle-of-the-road dad-rock.”

Since it dropped, the band have revealed that they were forced to rename their latest album because of Wicked: For Good , and are gearing up to head out on the road.

They will be playing a European stadium tour that is set to include two nights at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium at the end of June. They will also be playing a range of major European shows , a North American stadium tour , and have announced an Australian and New Zealand tour for late 2026 and early 2027 .
