Garth Brooks seeking up to $2bn for his music catalog (report)

Garth Brooks is considering selling his music catalog and is seeking around $2 billion for the rights to his songs and recordings.
That is according to the Wall Street Journal , which reported that the country star has been weighing a transaction for a few years, citing people familiar with the matter.
A deal at that price would rank among the largest ever struck for an individual artist or group’s catalog.
He has reportedly told potential investors that he believes the value of his music rights could fall anywhere from the high $1 billion range to more than $2 billion , according to people familiar with the matter cited by the newspaper.
Brooks recently told some investors that he is among a small number of artists of his level of fame who have not sold, and that he is now considering it, one of the people said.
Brooks recently passed 200 million albums sold in the US , according to the Recording Industry Association of America .
The WSJ reported that the total surpasses The Beatles for the most units sold in the country’s history.
Brooks is the only artist with 10 albums certified diamond, each having sold at least 10 million copies, according to the RIAA .
His run of hits includes The Dance , Friends in Low Places and Shameless .
He has won two Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2012 .
A price in Brooks ‘s range would place any deal among the biggest catalog transactions of recent years.
Sony Music acquired the catalog of rock band Queen in 2024 in a deal reported to be worth $1.27 billion .
Sony also owns a 50% stake in Michael Jackson ‘s catalog, acquired in a deal that valued Jackson’s music rights at up to $1.5 billion , with the company paying at least $600 million for its half.
The Jackson acquisition was one of a series of catalog deals by Sony Music Group under CEO Rob Stringer , alongside reported purchases of the catalogs of Queen and Pink Floyd .
Those deals form part of a wider Sony acquisition spree that MBW has estimated at more than $6 billion over the past decade.
Brooks ‘s popularity is concentrated in the US , and country music’s commercial success is heavily domestic, the WSJ noted.
The boom in music-rights investing has been driven in part by streaming services carrying artists’ work to larger audiences around the world, according to the report.
Brooks is among the most high-profile artists to have held most streaming services at a distance, the newspaper added.
He has stayed off platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music , in part because they do not sell music, according to the report.
In 2016 , Brooks signed a deal to make his music available for streaming exclusively through Amazon Music , as MBW reported at the time .
Amazon sells his albums digitally in full, in keeping with Brooks ‘s preference for complete albums over songs sold individually.
It could not be learned whether Brooks would allow his music to stream more widely in the event of a sale, something potential investors would likely want, the WSJ said. Music Business Worldwide
