Gene Wilder Biopic in the Works, Dito Montiel to Direct
An authorized biopic about comedian Gene Wilder is officially in production, with Dito Montiel slated to direct the film.
From Willy Wonka to some of Mel Brooks’ greatest films , Gene Wilder was an icon of 20th-century comedy, and a biopic exploring his rise to fame is now in the works from director Dito Montiel ( A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints , Riff Raff ).
Deadline reports that Montiel’s film, written with Jeremy Roth, “will explore the man behind the iconic performances, tracing his rise from a shy young theater actor to one of cinema’s most singular comedic voices, while examining the personal struggles, relationships, and challenges that shaped both his life and work.”
Casting has yet to be announced, though the instantly obvious answer (first mentioned internally by Consequence ‘s Paolo Ragusa) is The Bear star Jeremy Allen White — presuming he can be a little less emo (and swole) than his recent work in The Mandalorian and Grogu .
