Glen Matlock’s Sex Pistols Documentary to Stream in US This May

I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol , a documentary directed by Andre Relis and Nick Mead based on Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock’s 1990 memoir of the same name, is set for digital rental or purchase beginning May 26th via Apple TV.

The film made the rounds last year in the festival circuit, but this will be the first wide release of the documentary.

Matlock stated, “Why don’t you check out the US release of my documentary, I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol , loosely based on the still available book of the same name I wrote in the ‘90s? It tells the tale of my contribution to the band, which I think without it the group wouldn’t have had the success it had. For anybody interested in the birth of British punk and its effect on the then wider music scene, I’d suggest it’s essential viewing — but then I would say that!”

The film follows Matlock’s perspective of the formation, rise and explosive success of the band, following a similar timeline to director Danny Boyle’s Pistol , the six-episode FX miniseries.

Matlock co-wrote 10 of the 12 songs on the group’s legendary sole album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols , and the film focuses on his influence on the group, as well as the bleak social conditions of England at the time.

The documentary features interviews with Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook, as well as figures of the late ’70s punk scene like Debbie Harry, Clem Burke, and Chris Stein of Blondie, Billy Idol, and Wayne Kramer of MC5, among others.

The release of the film also serves as a prelude to the band’s upcoming 50th anniversary tour across North America featuring Frank Carter on vocals. Get tickets for those shows here .
