The Carmen performance schedule is now as follows: 30 April, 2, 3, 5, 7, 14, 17, 20, 24, 26, 28, 31 May & 4 June 2026 at Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera – SNFCC.
Co-production: Bru Zane France, Opéra Royal – Château de Versailles Spectacles, Opéra Orchestre Normandie Rouen, and Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française
At the additional performance on the 31st of May, the role of Carmen will be performed by Anita Rachvelishvili, Don José by Andrea Carè, Escamillo by Dionysios Sourbis, and Micaëla by Vassiliki Karayanni. Zuniga will be portrayed by Yannis Selitsaniotis, Moralès by Georgios Iatrou, Frasquita by Chrissa Maliamani, Mercédès by Chrysanthi Spitati, Le Dancaïre by Haris Andrianos, and Le Remendado by Yannis Kalyvas.
As part of its thematic focus for the 2025/26 season, the GNO presents, for the first time in Greece, a recreation of Carmen’s 1875 historical premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, through a stunning reconstruction that balances historical accuracy with a Modern Stage take. The production is directed by Romain Gilbert, with sets by Antoine Fontaine and costumes by Christian Lacroix, highlighting the opera’s enduring power through an atmospheric and well-crafted staging.
In 1830 Seville, the free-spirited and wild Carmen’s romance with Don José unfolds into a dark tale of passion and obsession. Captivated by her charm, he descends into moral and personal collapse, as the presence of the toreador Escamillo intensifies his jealousy. The conflict reaches a tragic climax when Carmen refuses to be subdued, paying the price for her choice of freedom with her life.
