The film sees the members of Green Day inspire a young, hopeful band by apparently granting them a support slot on a New Year’s Eve show after hearing their demo tape.

The film is set to be released in US cinemas on August 14, and now the full-length trailer has been shared. It shows the young trio, played by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust, meeting Green Day – who play themselves – and passing along their tape cassette.

They later get word that they have been granted the prestigious opening slot and they set about a cross-country trek to get to the show in question – although the journey will be filled with misadventure and obstacles.

The film has been in the works since early last year , originally operating under the title  New Years Rev .  Its events are inspired by Green Day’s real-life adventures on the road before their 1994 breakthrough album ‘Dookie’, and  in April, it was confirmed that it had been renamed as  Nimrods , in reference to Green Day’s 1997 album ‘Nimrod’.

It has been directed by Lee Kirk and also stars Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Jenna Fischer and Bobby Lee.

Shortly after the project was announced,  Green Day put out a casting call for some of its scenes , seeking out “punks, emo, hardcore, alternative and rocker young adults” aged between 18 and 30.  They then released the first trailer last September .

Green Day made headlines earlier this year when they  played the Super Bowl opening ceremony  at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on February 8.

Billie Joe Armstrong  and co. performed a medley of classic songs from their back catalogue, including the politically charged ‘American Idiot’. Armstrong did not, however, sing the tweaked line  “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda”  as he has done at recent shows.

The trio’s reluctance to make any political statement was a surprise to many , with some taking to social media to express their disappointment at the perceived missed opportunity.
