Now open at Grounds for Sculpture (GFS) is the collection-focused exhibition, Opening the Vault: A Look Inside the GFS Collection. The array of impressive artwork celebrates the depth and diversity of the GFS collection, uniting works across multiple mediums and stories. It is wonderfully displayed in the modern, spacious Domestic Arts Building and it will be available to guests through December 31, 2026.

Opening the Vault: A Look Inside the GFS Collection is curated collaboratively by staff from the Guest Services, Development, Education, and Marketing departments. The curators include Caitlin Burns , Claire Cossaboon, Danielle Costello, Ariel DellArena, Caroline Fazzini, Colleen Molnar, Amy Musselman, Jan Kathleen Reyes, Rye Palasciano, and Leah Southerland. These staff members were involved in every step of the process, from selecting works, shaping themes, designing the gallery, writing interpretive materials, and learning the intricacies of art handling and installation. We had the pleasure of attending a press event where each of the talented staff curators spoke about the artwork they selected from the GFS Collection, the artists’ backgrounds, and the significance of each piece.

The sculptures and works that have been selected for the exhibit were tucked away in the GFS Collection. They include pieces by masters of American art that are well known nationally and internationally. The positioning of the pieces is particularly important as each artwork lends interest and context to those surrounding it allowing for unique conversations. Guests will surely be impressed by the range and depth of the GFS collection.

Some of the pieces that fascinate include Helena Lukasova, I am the Venus; Willie Cole, Pretty in Pink; Steve Tobin, Homage a Femme; Layo Bright, George Floyd Murder; Joyce J. Scott , Everywoman's Harriet; and John Martini, Odd and Id.. Each of the works is accompanied by a QR code for an especially informative gallery experience.

Be sure to participate in the exhibition's "Collection Collab" where you can make and display a creation of your own. You can also touch many of the materials that are used in the sculptures of Opening the Vault: A Look Inside the GFS Collection.

Grounds for Sculpture is one of the premier cultural destinations in New Jersey for art enthusiasts and many more. Established by artist, Seward Johnson, the expansive 42 acre grounds invite you to stroll through the gardens and their galleries. The outdoors offer guests the opportunity to view compelling art installations and beautiful botanical gardens. It’s a wonderful day trip for people of all ages including families.
