Set in the world of professional hockey, the play follows Kate Baptista, head of communications for the Padua Pythons, who is tasked with managing the public image of newly acquired defenseman Pete Ruff. After a public incident thrusts them into the spotlight, the pair find themselves navigating a fake relationship that becomes increasingly complicated as personal feelings begin to emerge.
The production reimagines Shakespeare's battle-of-wills comedy through the lens of contemporary sports culture, exploring media narratives, public perception, family dynamics, and romance.
Directed by Danielle Baker, POWER PLAY continues Full Circle Theatre's focus on contemporary adaptations and original works. The company describes the production as a mix of sports media satire, romantic comedy, and theatrical comedy.
The cast includes Geneviève Dale as Kate, Bailey Wright as Bianca, Teresa Byrne as Joanna, Benjamin Kenneth Jones as Pete, Ben Gaudet as Luc, Braedan Hark as Tensy, Nick Wensrich as Julius, Rebecca Orion as Greer, Richelle Ho as Finley, Anna Shepard in multiple roles including Piper and Anchor, and Milton Joseph in multiple roles including Analyst and Podcast Bro.
The creative team includes writer Erin Weir, director Danielle Baker, assistant director Em Nelson, stage manager Dani Snyders-Blok, assistant stage manager Nick Turingan, set designer Josie Kaip, lighting designer Abby Weeks, costume designers Erin Weir and Shelley Weir, sound designer Claire Bolton, and intimacy director Gillian Klassen.
Performances run June 25–27 and July 1–4 at 7:30 p.m., with matinee performances on June 27, June 28, and July 4 at 2:00 p.m.
