Set in January 1670 during one of London’s harshest winters, the novel follows diarist Samuel Pepys as he investigates the murder of an aristocrat connected to the world of royal mistresses and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The story incorporates historical figures including Nell Gwyn, Aphra Behn , and several of King Charles II’s mistresses.
Jewers’ research for the novel also explores the history of Theatre Royal Drury Lane, described as the world’s oldest theatre in continuous use. Opened by King Charles II in 1663, the venue became closely associated with actress Nell Gwyn, who rose from selling oranges at the theatre to becoming one of its leading comedic performers and later the mistress of the king.
The theatre has survived multiple rebuilds and played a significant role in British theatrical history, including early performances of what became the British national anthem and the development of British pantomime through performer Joseph Grimaldi . Samuel Pepys also documented visits to the Original Theatre in his diaries, including one performance interrupted by a hailstorm due to the building’s exposure to the elements.
SEETHING LANE is Jewers’ second Samuel Pepys novel following The Lost Diary of Samuel Pepys , which was named among the Sunday Times historical fiction books of the year in 2022.
