Dead Kennedys founder Jello Biafra, born Eric Reed Boucher, suffered a hemorrhagic stroke two months ago, reportedly brought on by high blood pressure. At the time, his record label Alternative Tentacles shared this statement from Biafra, 67, via his social media accounts:
I hopped out of my bed because I needed to pee, and my left leg just collapsed under me and I fell to the floor. I couldn’t even break the fall with my left arm because it wasn’t working either. I tried to hop back up again, and I couldn’t. I realized I had “fallen and I can’t get up!
It was this point I thought, “Oh shit, I’m having a stroke!”
I still have a lot of great stuff in me, but right now I gotta lotta of rehabbing to do.
Anne-Marie Anderson from Alternative Tentacles has been caring for Biafra at her home and sharing updates about his condition on her Facebook account, cross-posting them to Biafra's. The latest, posted three days ago, was recirculated by the official Dead Kennedys account on Instagram. This is a noteworthy show of solidarity because at the time of his stroke, Biafra was publicly clashing with his former bandmates over their participation in the controversial Punk In The Park festival series.
Updates throughout March were measured at best. "Well, it has been a devastating week," Anderson wrote on March 15 , describing an "intense and chaotic" recovery process and asking friends to coordinate their visits so it wouldn't be too exhausting. By March 25 , her report was more positive: "Jello is improving every day. The various therapists are really happy with his progress." The latest update reads as follows:
Jello is progressing nicely. His speech has mostly come back in full, and cognitively, it’s like the stroke never happened. The left side is still weak but it is doing much better than it was. He has been living with me so I can care for him, but he is so much more self sufficient than he was, he will most likely go home this coming week. Thank you again for the outpouring of support. It has meant the world to him.
Best wishes to Biafra as he continues his recovery.
