Jeremy Strong’s “insane” Mark Zuckerberg transformation in ‘The Social Reckoning’ trailer draws praise

The first trailer has arrived for The Social Reckoning , the follow-up to 2010 drama The Social Network , and fans have praised Jeremy Strong’s transformation into Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The film, released October 9, is directed by Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the first film, taking over from the previous director David Fincher .

The story is described as a “spiritual successor” to the previous movie, and follows the 2021 Facebook Files investigation, where whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) and Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horwitz ( Jeremy Allen White ) expose Meta’s harmful internal practices. Succession actor Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg, portrayed in the clip as a calculating and combative social media pioneer.

The trailer has received a variety of reactions of X (formerly Twitter), with many expressing their disbelief at Strong’s transformation into Zuckerberg.

“Must a movie have a ‘good script’ or ‘coherent storyline’ when it has Jeremy Strong in a transformational supporting role dogwalking everyone?” said one, while another added: “Jeremy Strong looks like he became Zuck man this is insane”.

Others were sceptical about the absence of Fincher. “ The Social Network was a modern masterpiece with nearly zero flaws,” wrote one user. “It deserved to win Best Picture over The King’s Speech & David Fincher deserved to win Best Director. The Social Reckoning looks nowhere near as good as this film. I’ll try to be optimistic, but it’s a high bar.”

Another remarked: “ The Social Reckoning trailer is a good reminder of how important David Fincher was to the success of The Social Network ,” while one user described the decision to follow Fincher’s work as “nuts”.

Jeremy Strong is known for his practice of method acting, in which he immerses himself in the character that he is playing. The approach has been criticised by former Succession co-star Brian Cox, who described it as “fucking annoying” in 2023.

In April, Cox revealed Strong pleaded with him to stop talking about his method acting in interviews.
