Lizzo Compares New Single 'B—h' to Taylor Swift's 'Taylor's Version' Re-Recordings

Lizzo had a lot to unpack on the lyrics of her layered new song, “Bitch,” which finds the singer reclaiming her voice and narrative — similar to how Taylor Swift did the same by re-releasing four of her older albums as part of her “Taylor’s Version” series.

And on a new episode of Genius Verified posted Friday (May 15), the Yitty founder noted that “Bitch,” which interpolates Meredith Brooks’ decades-old song of the same name, is somewhat similar to the Eras headliner’s re-releases. “Shout-out to Meredith Brooks,” Lizzo began. “I want the whole world to know that this is her record.”

“There were things that she said in the ’90s that worked,” she continued of Brooks’ original track. “I feel like that would’ve gotten lost in translation a little bit. I was like, ‘This is Lizzo’s version.'”

“You know how it’s like, ‘Taylor’s Version?'” she added with a smile. “It’s like, ‘Bitch (Lizzo’s Version).'”

Much like Swift throughout her “Taylor’s Version” re-recording process — which the pop superstar kicked off in 2021 after publicly opposing the sale of her master recordings to Scooter Braun two years prior — Lizzo had a lot to say on “Bitch.” The “Truth Hurts” artist has faced her own share of trials and tribulations in the music industry, namely her ongoing legal battle with some of her ex dancers who are suing her for alleged sexual harassment and toxic workplace conditions, which Lizzo has unequivocally denied.

“I felt like I was carrying the experiences of every Black woman in the industry who became successful and then had to deal with b—h allegations,” she told Genius Verified of her single’s second verse. “I remember thinking, ‘Why is this even a thing?'”

“Why isn’t there a campaign of men saying, ‘I’m not an a–hole, I’m the CEO?'” Lizzo added. “Men are given grace. People say, ‘Well, yeah, how else did he become a CEO? He had to be aggressive.’ … People respect that.”

“Bitch” dropped on May 1. It precedes Lizzo’s upcoming album of the same name, which is set to drop on June 5.
