Stage director Maria Todaro, General Director and CEO of Florida Grand Opera, has been selected to direct a new production of Puccini's Tosca at the 72nd Festival Puccini in Torre del Lago, Viareggio, Italy. Performances will take place at the Gran Teatro all'Aperto Giacomo Puccini on July 18 and 31 and August 8 and 21, 2025.

The Festival Puccini, now in its 72nd edition, is one of the world's most celebrated outdoor opera festivals, drawing international audiences each summer to the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli — the landscape that shaped Puccini's imagination and inspired his greatest works. Entrusting a new production of Tosca to a director of Todaro's caliber is a distinction in keeping with the festival's legacy of visionary, world-class stagings.

Todaro brings singular authority to this production. Her history with Tosca is a defining thread in her career: in 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, she staged the first live drive-in opera in the United States — a fully socially distanced, sci-fi production of Tosca in Kingston, New York. Opera UK wrote that her concept “worked because she stayed true to the drama at its core.” She has also explored the work through volumetric and virtual reality formats, pushing the boundaries of how opera can be experienced and reimagined for new audiences.

“To bring Tosca to life in Torre del Lago — the very place that inspired Puccini to write it — is something I hold with great reverence,” said Todaro. “This opera has traveled with me through some of the most extraordinary chapters of my career. To now bring it home, to the landscape where Puccini himself dreamed it, is a gift.”
