“Michael” Becomes the Highest-Grossing Musical Biopic in History

Despite expensive reshoots and legal drama , Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael has become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, now having earned $911.9 million worldwide. (Grossing $1 billion definitely seems within the film’s reach.) Deadline reported the news Friday along with a breakdown of all the other box office records the film has broken, including the largest global opening weekend ever for a musical biopic and the highest-grossing biopic, domestically, of all time.

The movie, starring Jaafar Jackson as the young adult version of his famous uncle, chronicles the events of Jackson’s early life, ending right as Jackson broke free of his father Joe’s control over his career. Michael has now beaten multiple records set by the previous highest-grossing musical biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody .
