Morrissey Demands Takedown of Satirical Post About His “Malefactors”

Morrissey didn’t appreciate a certain bit of recent satire directed at him, apparently.

The Smiths singer’s team is said to have requested a post on Instagram by Morrissey-meme maker MozPosting be taken down, according to reporting by Stereogum . Morrissey’s team sent the request saying the post constituted “copyright infringement and impersonation,” MozPosting relayed in an Instagram story after fulfilling the takedown request.

The post by MozPosting mimicked the look of a post on Morrissey’s official website and listed the singer’s supposed enemies under the title “The Malefactors.” The joke was that list contained a meandering and extensive series of absurd names, including Edward Cullen, the vampire of the Twilight series, Ulfric Stormcloak, a character in the Skyrim video game, and Popeye among other real but equality outlandish prospects such as 50 Cent, Meryl Streep, and Gordon Ramsey, who likely are nowhere near enemies of Morrissey. The list also named Johnny Marr three times. Get it? Morrissey really doesn’t like The Smiths guitarist. Readers will have to decide if that’s a joke or not.

MozPosting uploaded a series of stories on Instagram saying Morrissey’s team had demanded the post be removed, Stereogum reported. “This account is and has always been intended as satire, and the post was a parody, but I don’t want to create any unnecessary issues,” MozPosting said. “Thank you to everyone who enjoyed the joke while it lasted,” and added “To everyone messaging asking if my previous story is a joke….. unfortunately, it isn’t. I’m genuinely devastated. I’m a huge fan of the man’s music, and this whole situation has been incredibly disheartening.”

MozPosting explained “I created this page out of appreciation and to share a few laughs in difficult times, because goodness knows we could all use them. It was never intended to cause harm.”

The takedown request came a couple days after Morrissey’s team said on his website that they discovered nine online impersonators with political agendas, including one that was connected to a site in the U.S. that is “generally unsupportive” of the singer. One of the impersonators was connected to a former band member of The Smiths, according to Morrissey’s team.

In other news, Morrissey has scheduled a June 19th release of Deluxe Notre-Dame EP. It is available for pre-order here . Morrissey will start a tour in Europe later in June before coming to the US this summer and fall to support his latest album, Make-Up Is a Lie , which came out in March.
