Mortal Kombat game sequel confirmed after movie's success

A new Mortal Kombat game is in the works following the success of the recent blockbuster movie, according to the franchise’s co-creator Ed Boon.

The original Mortal Kombat was released in 1992 and spawned a number of sequels, as well as an animated TV series, a live-action movie and a comic book series. After 11 mainline games, the franchise was rebooted with 2023’s Mortal Kombat 1 .

Last year, developers NeatherRealm confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 would be getting no more characters or story expansions following the Khaos Reigns DLC because the studio needed to move onto its next project, though they didn’t confirm what that would be.

In a new interview with Collider , Boon has now confirmed they’re working on a sequel to Mortal Kombat 1 . “We’re definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game,” he said. “We’re definitely doing more as well, so there are a lot of parts on the stove, not just with games, [but with] with other forms of media [too],” he said. “We’ve got a lot of great announcements that are coming.”

The second live-action Mortal Kombat movie was released into cinemas last week. The sequel received middling reviews from critics but is proving a hit with fans. According to aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes , Mortal Kombat 2 has a review average of 65 per cent but has been rated 90 per cent by the public.

Last week, one of the film’s producers’ Todd Garner hit back at Mortal Kombat 2 ’s negative reviews. “It’s clear they have never played the game and have no idea what the fans want or ANY of the rules / canon of Mortal Kombat . One reviewer was mad that a guy ‘had a laser eye!’ Why the fuck do we still allow people that don’t have any love for the genre review these movies! Baffling,” he wrote in a now-deleted post on X (via IGN ).

However, he soon backtracked after his original post went viral. “I realise that, in my eagerness to defend the people who worked so hard on this film, I lost sight of the fact that our job is to create the best possible movie—not only for the fans, but for anyone coming to the cinema,” he wrote . “Once that movie is out in the world, no one is above criticism. For that, I apologise.”
