NCAA Denies Brendan Sorsby's Reinstatement Bid for 2026 Season
Sources confirm the NCAA has denied Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby's request to be reinstated for eligibility in the 2026 season, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Tuesday.

The NCAA has denied Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby 's request for reinstatement for eligibility for the 2026 season, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Tuesday.
Texas Tech said it will be appeal the NCAA's ruling.
"We believe that given the facts and the context of Brendan's case, the NCAA's ruling should be reversed or modified," Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec said in a letter on Tuesday. "As a generation of college athletes face the legalization and rapid proliferation of sports betting in our country, gambling addiction is rising to the point of epidemic among college aged men in particular."
Sorsby has completed a 35-day in-patient rehab for gambling addiction at Algamus in Goodyear, Arizona, and is set to return to campus in the coming days. He has a court date set for June 1 in Lubbock County.
Upon returning to campus, Sorsby will undergo outpatient clinical care, participate in group and individual therapy, have active monitoring of his technological devices and installation of software to block betting sites from his devices, Schovanec said. Other measures will be taken, including an appointment of a custodian to oversee his personal finances and periodic compliance checks, Schovanec added.
Sorsby, who acknowledged wagering on sports, including on his own team his freshman season at Indiana in 2022, filed for an injunction against the NCAA last week that would have allowed him to play for the Red Raiders this season after transferring from Cincinnati in the offseason.
The NCAA prohibits student-athletes from betting on any NCAA-sanctioned sport, professional or collegiate.
