The Pipeline Arts Foundation today announced three initiatives that expand its support of new musical theatre artists and projects: the launch of a new commissioning initiative for Award alumni, a residency collaboration with Drama Club in Maine, and the creation of Pipeline Arts Productions, a new producing entity.

“We want to emphasize sustained support for our winners, beyond just one show,” said Pipeline’s Carin Wagner. “From the first seeds of an idea to a full production, we’re giving creators the time, space, and resources they need to make bold work.”

At the center of the expansion is a new commissioning initiative for past Pipeline Award recipients. Each year, alumni artists will be invited to propose new musical theatre projects, with one to three works chosen for commission. Commissioned works enter a 3 step process. First, creative teams receive financial support toward the completion of a first draft, accompanied by ongoing dramaturgical engagement. Then, projects continue development through a dedicated residency with an emphasis on supportive feedback and revision. Finally, the next iteration of the work will be presented in New York City.

Pipeline has also announced its inaugural commissions:

Synopsis: A drug-addled young line cook gets ensnared in a hostage situation with the mob boss who finances his restaurant. As he races around New York to scrounge together the ransom money, he comes face to face with the dark underbelly of a rapidly changing city and the many strange characters who populate it.

Synopsis: When the funding for their fall show is cut, a group of enterprising theater kids attempt to revive an obscure Broadway-bound musical that premiered—and perished—in their sleepy upstate town. But as they unravel the mystery of the musical’s deadly opening night, they unwittingly create a link between The Great White Way… and The Great Beyond!

Pipeline has also entered into a new collaboration with Drama Club to host an annual, paid, weeklong residency with a curated cohort of Pipeline Award recipients - spanning both previous winners and the newest honorees - to workshop their projects in a collaborative community.

Held on Drama Club's 65-acre lakeside campus along Torsey Lake, Maine. The residency week is designed to balance concentrated creation with community. Days are dedicated to the "heavy lifting" of writing and revision, while evenings are reserved for The Nightly Salon—shared meals followed by informal presentations of material. These sessions offer a collaborative exchange of feedback and the cross-pollination of ideas between different creative teams. “Our missions as organizations are entirely aligned,” adds Shannon Morrison, Artistic Director of Drama Club. “Pipeline and Drama Club support the same universe of artists, so it's a natural fit to align resources through this collaboration.”

Completing the expanded model is the launch of Pipeline Arts Productions, a new for-profit producing arm designed to support the advancement of projects beyond development and into full production. Pipeline Arts Productions will prioritize projects by artists who have previously received Pipeline Awards and will operate alongside the Foundation to create greater continuity between artistic development and presentation.

Its inaugural production is Animal Wisdom, by 2024 Award Recipient Heather Christian , presented in association with Signature Theatre. The Off-Broadway engagement plays the Pershing Square Signature Center, through June 14.
