The American Theatre of Actors has announced the return and extension of Richard Vetere ’s POET ON A STRING following its initial run at the Sargent Theatre. The production will now perform May 27 through June 7, 2026 as part of the theater’s WIT! (Women in Theatre) Program.
Directed by Amber Brookes, the play is set during a summer weekend in Frenchtown, New Jersey, in 1939 as the threat of World War II approaches. Inspired by real events, the drama centers on writer Delmore Schwartz , his wife Gertrude Buckman, and critic and screenwriter James Agee as they grapple with shifting artistic and cultural influence in America.
The production explores the changing relationship between poetry, literature, and film at a moment when cinema was beginning to emerge as a dominant cultural force.
The returning production will feature Dustin Pazar as James Agee , Amber Brookes as Gertrude Buckman, and Jake Minter as Delmore Schwartz .
The creative team also includes Jonathan Beebe as assistant director, Paul Maurizino as stage manager, Josh Bartosch as production assistant, and Jake Minter as lighting designer.
Performances will take place Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:00 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 3:00 p.m. at the Sargent Theatre.
POET ON A STRING is presented through the American Theatre of Actors’ WIT! Program, which focuses on supporting women’s leadership and perspectives in theater through the presentation of new and provocative works.
Founded in 1976 by James Jennings , the American Theatre of Actors is dedicated to the development of new plays and the presentation of classic dramatic works in New York City.
