Review: "Jackass" Crew Delivers Classic Carnage in Fifth and Final Film
The "Jackass" crew, led by Liz Shannon Miller, unleashes plenty of new and classic carnage in what is being billed as their fifth and final movie, "Best and Last."

Jackass: Best and Last is designed to make people who grew up with the antics of Johnny Knoxville , Steve-O , Chris Pontius, and “Wee Man” feel the passing of time. They’re not young men anymore; their bodies are more covered by tattoos, less capable of easy recoveries. And they have to get colonoscopies now — though as this fifth movie reveals, that standard medical test has become a font of inspiration for them.
That’s the Jackass way, after all, with director Jeff Tremaine and the creative team always aiming to explore new frontiers in prankwork and self-harm. Just because they now have access to prescription-grade laxatives doesn’t make the butt stuff that results any less gleeful, profane, and/or deranged.
The title captures the movie’s commitment to being the final installment as well as its clip show nature, with numerous best-of sequences scattered in with new footage and classic or unseen bits. Oddly, on one level this makes Jackass: Best and Last particularly well-suited to newcomers to the franchise, as it really does encompass a great deal of its history, with plenty of highlights to showcase the full range of insane stunts executed over the years.

However, the movie doesn’t provide any context for why it’s a big deal for the movie to use new, previously unused footage featuring Bam Margera , following a deal struck with the former team member , who was fired from Jackass Forever during production. The Margera footage, including scenes that were cut from Jackass Forever , is presented without too much sentiment — Margera has experienced his share of legal issues in recent years, and was not involved in any of the new filming.
For those worried about the movie playing too much like a retrospective, though, the new material is plentiful. Steve-O, midway through the movie, admits that he’s gunning for MVP status with his contributions, a decision that leads him down some very painful paths. In watching, say, Steve-O have an intimate encounter with the new robot member of the Jackass squad , one does have to wonder where the line between this and pornography lies. Thanks to so many scenes, the mysteries of the male anatomy are truly laid bare.
One real highlight of the archival footage: A very funny clip, shot in April 2002, of Steve-O making a point of saying that he has no desire to ever jam anything up his ass. This is what media scholars might refer to as “foreshadowing.” The clip is followed by a replay of the segment from Jackass: The Movie in which the late Ryan Dunn inserted a toy car into his rectum and went to get X-rays; Dunn passed away in 2011, but his memory still lingers. “I miss Dunn,” someone muses over the closing credits.

At a certain point, as with most Jackass movies, its vignette structure sweeps the viewer away into what feels like an unending river of bodily harm. In the mix of archival and new footage, time seems to lose all meaning, even with title cards popping up to establish dates. The past and present colliding like a giant hammer to the nuts.
There is an easy way to be sure if something was shot recently: Look for Steve-O’s dick face tattoo, which Post Malone added to his skin in 2024 . Another way to be sure about when something was filmed is to pay attention to Knoxville, who approaches every new scene with a determined commitment to avoiding any additional head trauma. Below-the-waist blows are totally fine, though — to the best of my knowledge, it’s impossible to get concussed through one’s testicles. Though if there were a way to do it, the Jackass es would find it.
Knoxville behaving cautiously on camera definitely speaks to this being the right time for the series to wrap things up. As Steve-O recently summed up in a recent interview with Playboy , “Really, the end of Jackass was when [Johnny] Knoxville got hit by that bull in [ Jackass Forever ]. That was the fucking final hit for Knoxville’s head. Had to be. If Knoxville is no longer willing to get hit in the head, you really can’t do Jackass .”

Best and Last replays the bull stunt from Forever (both the first and the second take) to really drive that point home. In general, Knoxville’s new inability to take one for the team adds an additional reason for leaning on older footage; it’s a way of ensuring the necessary level of carnage one demands of a Jackass movie, without crippling its cast.
In writing about Larry David’s new HBO series Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness , something that came to mind was the fact that David’s been exploring the fictional persona he first created for Curb Your Enthusiasm for decades — and for the show’s whole 12-season run, “Larry” remained a relatively consistent character. People certainly change as time passes, but they don’t necessarily change that much.
It’s something that really comes out in this movie — budgets might have gotten bigger with the passing of time, but the core of the show endures. There’s even a sweetness to the humble beginnings on display here, especially the extremely low-fi nature of the stuntwork. As gnarly as it is to revisit the 2010 Poo Cocktail Supreme, it’s equally harrowing to watch a young Knoxville get taped into a cardboard box and then tipped down a flight of stairs.

Overall, there are multiple moments where Knoxville and the gang get genuinely emotional about the end of an era, but they never get too bogged down in sentiment — instead crafting a gloriously violent display of chaos to wrap things up, of course using a super-sized shopping cart as the vehicle of doom. It feels very likely, this time, that Knoxville is serious about saying goodbye to Jackass . But that doesn’t mean its legacy won’t live on.
Jackass: Best and Last punches theaters in the soft bits starting June 26th.
