Directed by Sean Douglas, the production combines the atmosphere of a traditional English country house murder mystery with Stoppard’s signature style of fast-paced comedy and theatrical absurdity. The play is widely known for its clever structure, playful humor and satirical take on the world of theatre.
“The Real Inspector Hound” follows two theatre critics, Birdboot and Moon, portrayed by Theon Weber and Casey Simpson , who attend a performance of what appears to be a standard whodunit. As the mystery unfolds, however, the critics find themselves unexpectedly pulled into the action, blurring the line between observer and participant.
Filled with mistaken identities, dramatic twists and escalating confusion, the play pokes fun at classic detective stories while also celebrating the theatrical traditions that inspired them. Stoppard’s script combines intellectual satire with broad comedy, creating a production designed to appeal to both longtime theatre enthusiasts and audiences simply looking for an entertaining evening.
The cast also includes David Greene as Simon Gascoyne, Sarah Elliott as Felicity Cunningham, Ray Ryan as Maj. Magnus Muldoon, Miriam Hoenig as Lady Cynthia Muldoon, Rachel Klein as Mrs. Drudge and Mark Lewis as Inspector Hound.
Performances continue through May 10. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 in advance and increase by $5 at the door. Advance tickets are available through Hilo Community Players .
