TUTA Theatre is currently performing CRIME AND PUNISHMENT in their intimate space in Chicago's Ravenswood Manor neighborhood. Premiering at Writers Theatre in 2003, the adaptation by Marilyn Campbell and Curt Columbus has been produced across the country and world. Whether you are a fan or a newcomer to Fyodor Dostoevsky ’s 1866 novel, TUTA”s production captures the psychological suspense of the classic story.

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT follows Raskolnikov ( Clifton Frei ), an impoverished law student living alone in St. Petersburg. Through him, the audience meets several central characters – the devoted yet suffering Sonia (Felix), her drunken father ( Huy Nguyen ), and a greedy elderly pawnbroker (also played by Felix). Raskolnikov believes himself to be above the law, with the power to decide who deserves to live or die. After a brutal murder draws the attention of Inspector Porfiry (also portrayed by Nguyen), Raskolnikov begins to unravel. What follows is an intense psychological struggle between justice, guilt, and redemption.

Campbell and Columbus are successful in adapting an over 500-page book to a ninety-minute stage adaptation. Using Dostoevsky’s text, they are able to present the Russian classic's philosophical and psychological themes beautifully. The scenic design by Tatiana Kahvegian (Broadway’s THE OUTSIDERS) and Keith Parham (Broadway’s BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY) is breath-taking. The action unfolds on a dirt-covered platform surrounded by plastic curtains, creating a sense of confinement that envelops both the audience and cast within the intimate 24-seat venue. Parham’s lighting design further heightens the play’s claustrophobic atmosphere.

Co-Artistic Director Jacqueline Stone directs CRIME AND PUNISHMENT with thoughtful precision, creating a staggering theatrical experience. Frei powerfully captures Raskolnikov’s deteriorating mental state. Never leaving the stage, he delivers a performance that is intelligent, emotionally raw, and at times terrifying. One striking visual moment occurs when Frei circles the platform while avoiding the light, embodying Porfiry’s line of “a moth circling a flame” and capturing Raskolnikov’s growing anxiety. Frei’s Raskolnikov is both haunting and deeply pitiful, revealing the character’s vulnerability alongside his unraveling psyche.

Felix and Nguyen perform Sonia and Porfiry along with other characters with precision and grace. With little costume changes (designed by Lia Wallfish) both transfer through the different characters flawlessly by their physical and vocal performance. All three performers will have the audience in both awe and shock by the talent and intensity they bring to the play.

TUTA Theatre’s CRIME AND PUNISHMENT is an intense and gripping production that fully captures the emotional and philosophical weight of Dostoevsky’s novel. Through inventive staging, powerful performances, and a constant sense of tension, the audience is pulled directly into Raskolnikov’s psychological unraveling. In such an intimate setting, there is no escape from the play’s questions of morality, guilt, and redemption — making this adaptation as unsettling as it is unforgettable.
