Sammy Hagar has some advice on love. After 31 years of marriage to his wife Kari Karte Hagar, the Red Rocker shared insight into what has kept the couple together throughout the decades.

When speaking to People , Hagar offered the first part to his revelation. “I’ll be serious about this because, you know, the first thing you say is, ‘happy wife, happy life,’ but one thing is that we’re equals,” the musician, 78, said. “We’ll get into it like all couples, but we’re always equal — there’s no her under my thumb, or me under her thumb.”

Hagar also emphasized the need for “passion in the relationship,” before adding, “We don’t sleep in separate bedrooms, man.” He warned, “When that’s over, when you’re not really still physically and emotionally attracted to your partner, I think that’s a dangerous thing.” Hagar concluded, “Having a great physical and emotional relationship is so important.”
