‘Sea Of Thieves’ Live-Action Film Joins Dozen Xbox Adaptations

Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty has confirmed a number of adaptations are in the works including a live-action Sea Of Thieves film.

Sea Of Thieves was released in 2018 as one of the first first-party Xbox Game Pass titles. A number of updates have been released over the years and by 2024, Sea Of Thieves had been played by more than 40million people.

“ Sea Of Thieves is a smash-hit pirate adventure game, offering the quintessential pirate experience of plundering lost treasures, intense battles, vanquishing sea monsters and more,” reads the official description of the game.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly , Booty confirmed that a live-action Sea Of Thieves movie is in development, with Marvel’s Destin Daniel Cretton ( Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings ) producing the project.

“The main character of a Sea Of Thieves game is actually the player and the community,” Booty said. “So if you sit down to think about Sea Of Thieves , it’s not, Who are the main characters? What’s the plot? It’s a super social game, but there’s a tone to Sea Of Thieves . It’s built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that’s going to be like.”

It’s one of a dozen adaptations Xbox currently have in the works. Amazon Prime Video is gearing up to start on the third season of its hugely-popular Fallout series with a Big Brother -inspired spin-off also in development . A sequel to A Minecraft Movie is currently filming, Amazon is also working on a live-action take on Wolfenstein while rival streamer Netflix is developing animated stories set in the world of Minecraft and Gears Of War .

Xbox are also creating a live-action Gear Of War film, which will explore “the origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures set on destroying humanity.”

“The game really is about the bonds between teams. It’s about brotherhood at its core,” Booty explained. “When you go visit the studio, their tagline is ‘Never Fight Alone.’ So when you think about that for a dramatic narrative, it’s a pretty good starting point.”

Booty has also teased more Halo adaptations could be possible following Paramount’s adaptation, which ran for two seasons before being cancelled . “It’s iconic to Xbox and we’re certainly going to invest going forward.”

In other news, Tom Holland  and  Zendaya  have spoken about their love for the  Marvel’s Spider-Man  games while promoting new movie  Spider-Man: Brand New Day .
