This theatrical adventure collides fairy tales and modern life in a heart-filled journey through time. Sleeping Beauty: The Time Traveler and Her New Millenium Prince runs June 18- August 23, 2026. Tickets are $28 and available online or by phone at 301-634-2270.
“With an extraordinary 30-year career shaping The National Theatre for Young Audiences landscape at Imagination Stage, Janet Stanford has inspired generations of artists and audiences,” says Artistic Director Kurt Boehm . “It’s incredibly exciting to welcome her to Adventure Theatre MTC to direct one of her own original works. This production combines epic storytelling, emotional heart, and a sense of wonder that feels perfect for families experiencing theatre together.”
Rolly’s ordinary summer takes an extraordinary turn when a mysterious magical object transports him back to the Age of Charlemagne. There, he meets Aurora — a spirited 12-year-old princess who dreams of adventure far beyond her castle walls. But Aurora’s royal parents have spent her entire life protecting her from a dangerous curse destined to place her into an endless sleep.
As Rolly and Aurora form an unlikely friendship, the two set out on a daring quest to change Aurora’s fate and find freedom on their own terms. Together, they journey across time itself, discovering courage, belonging, and the power of choosing your own future. Filled with humor, heart, and theatrical magic, Sleeping Beauty: The Time Traveler and Her New Millenium Prince reimagines the beloved fairy tale for a new generation.
Says Janet Stanford of this production, “This play is dedicated to my daughter and son who inspired the two young characters. The Princess is a risk-taker who craves adventure while her latter-day Prince is a video-game addicted guy who finds school-work dull. I saw in the story of Sleeping Beauty many commonalities in young people's experience between the past and present.
“Technology has changed over time but every child's wish to be independent has not. I also loved that, when I was writing the show, The Legend of Zelda was getting so many kids interested in history, time-travel and fantastical worlds. The first recorded versions of Sleeping Beauty date back to medieval France so I set the show there and let the characters tell me where to go from there. I am excited to share this nail-biter of a musical with Adventure Theatre audiences this summer. It's going to be awesome!”
Leading the company is Chelsea Majors as Aurora, following acclaimed performances in Freckleface Strawberry , Not Your Mother’s Goose! , and She Persisted . Opposite her is Carl L. Williams as Rolly, returning to ATMTC after appearing in Aesop’s Fables and national tours of Three Little Birds and Big Nate: The Musical .
Sally Imbriano, who recently appeared in Knuffle Bunny: The Cautionary Musical at Adventure Theatre MTC joins the cast as Queen/Mom. The King/Dad is played by newcomer to the Adventure Theatre MTC stage, Jake Stibbe.
