Whoo! I tell you what, I love this fucking feeling. A guttural scramble of a guitar riff? A guys bellowing over the top like he's somehow trapped underneath the guitar riff and he needs you to rescue him? A chorus where all the dramatic stakes zoom upward? An extended trippy breakdown, followed by an even heavier riff? That's the good shit. "The Day Of Execution," the latest track from the French power trio Slift, is like the wind in your hair on a sunny day.
I guess more accurately, "The Day Of Execution" is what might happen if Torche attempted to go prog, while keeping all their ferocity intact. I mean that as a high compliment. "The Day Of Execution" is the latest single from Slift's upcoming LP Fantasia , and it makes me really want to hear the album. We already posted lead single " A Storm Of Wings ." That song was good. This one is better.
In a press release, Slift say, "'The Day Of Execution' is about the effect of time passing on each and every one of us, and about memory loss. It portrays the nostalgia that creeps into us as time goes by. Fantasia is such an ancient city that it no longer remembers itself, and this gradually alienates its inhabitants." Check out director Ben Amos Cooper's fantastical animated video below.
Fantasia is out 6/5 on Sub Pop.
