Smashing Pumpkins have announced they have reunited with Butch Vig for a new song that’s “98 per cent done” – and on its way soon.

The Garbage drummer and co-producer is famed for his work on several classic 1990s records, including Nirvana (‘Nevermind’), Sonic Youth (‘Dirty’, ‘Experimental Jet Set’, ‘Trash and No Star’) and, of course, the Pumpkins themselves, who worked with Vig for their first two albums, 1991’s ‘Gish’ and 1993’s ‘Siamese Dream’.

Now, Billy Corgan and co. are set to team up with Vig over 30 years later for a brand new song. The frontman shared the news on a Substack livestream on Tuesday (May 19), saying the track was “98 per cent” done.

“We’ve just recorded one song,” Corgan said on the livestream. “It’s for a specific purpose, which I can’t give that part out… I haven’t come up with a title yet, honestly. The plan is the song will be released this year. I can’t say exactly when. There’s reasons for that… The song is really cool. It’s basically done recording. I’d say there’s a couple little things left. I’d say it’s 98% done.”

However, Corgan cautioned that the track was not likely to be performed on the Pumpkins’ upcoming ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ anniversary tour due to a “timing issue”.

The Pumpkins will go on tour in September, where they’ll stage “one-of-a-kind” concerts as  “two distinct sets”. These sets will celebrate “the 30th anniversary of ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’ plus nearly four decades of hits and dark treasures’.”

Kicking off with two huge shows at London’s Royal Festival Hall on September 1 and 2, they’ll travel through Antwerp, Paris and Madrid for shows before heading off to the US.

They’ll commence their US tour in Colombus, Ohio on September 30, before continuing throughout the following month with shows in Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Charlotte, Jacksonville and more. The band will tour throughout November, rounding off their anniversary tour with a mighty show at California’s Kia Forum on the 12th.

They’re also set to play a number of festivals including Lollapalooza and Darker Waves.
