SAFE & SOUND THE MUSICAL will be presented as part of the New York Theater Festival with performances June 16, 19, and 20 at Teatro LATEA.
Created by Holly Block and Elizabeth Jerjian, the musical follows the character Love as she guides three individuals on a journey of self-discovery by reconnecting them with their inner child. The story centers on themes of healing, identity, mental health, resilience, and self-acceptance.
According to the creators, the production incorporates sound healing into its musical orchestrations. The practice uses sound bowls, vocal sound healing, and Reiki-inspired techniques intended to create therapeutic vibrations throughout the performance experience.
“We live in a world that is constantly giving messages that you can't be who you are,” said Jerjian. “Shedding that belief happened through cowriting the songs, cocreating the characters and channeling the sound healing embedded in this musical. Safe & Sound The Musical is an expression of both of us in what we need and what we have experienced. It's a journey.”
“Struggling with dyslexia my whole life took a toll on my emotional well-being and mental health,” added Block. “But, I discovered musical theater at a young age and it has been a huge source for my self-esteem, confidence and mental health well-being.”
Two songs from the musical, “What Now?” and “I'm Not Ashamed,” have already been released on streaming platforms. “What Now?” is performed by Broadway performer Natalie Weiss , while “I'm Not Ashamed” features multiple artists, including appearances by Block and Jerjian.
The production is directed by Lauren Shields with co-musical direction by Lee Moretti .
“When I was first introduced to Safe & Sound The Musical, it was through a live concert performance of the music,” said Shields. “I was immediately struck by the raw emotion woven throughout both the lyrics and the score. In that moment, I knew there was something truly special and deeply human at the heart of this story.”
The Equity-approved showcase stars Holly Block as Love. The cast also includes Ryan Doyle , Coleman Cummings , Gabbie Sansone, Mackenzie Mercer , Scarlett Jade Gleason, Alejandro Kristensen, Armis Gjevukaj, Anthony Shepard, Brendan Wallace Downey, Melania Vasquez, Grace Bobber , Hollyn Gayle , and Megan Leung.
SAFE & SOUND THE MUSICAL will be performed June 16, 19, and 20, 2026, at Teatro LATEA as part of the New York Theater Festival.
Layla Warren's solo show LONG WAY HOME traces her journey from war-torn Tehran to American television, exploring identity, survival, and the diaspora experience at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Quaz Degraft's solo play In the Black follows a first-generation Ghanaian American accountant navigating Wall Street's moral compromises. The darkly comedic production is loosely inspired by Degraft's own journey from finance to acting.
Theatre Republic's How Not to Make It in America, a one-performer show in a story inspired by playwright Emily Steel's experiences on September 11th, will play the Edinburgh Fringe as part of the House of Oz season.
Kara Wilson, an 81-year-old playwright and painter, will bring her sixth 'painter play' to the Edinburgh Fringe, recreating a live oil painting in the style of Lancashire artist Helen Bradley, who began painting at 65.
