Spotify launches 650+ narrated magazine articles from Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, and more
May 28, 2026 By Mandy Dalugdug
Spotify has launched a new format on its platform: narrated long-form magazine articles.
The feature, which went live on Tuesday (May 26), brings more than 650 articles from publications including Rolling Stone , The Atlantic , Vogue , Variety , Billboard , Vibe , GQ , WIRED , Vanity Fair , and Pitchfork to the Spotify app.
Each narrated article is under two hours long and has been produced in-house by Spotify ‘s Audiobooks team.
Premium subscribers can listen to narrated articles as part of their monthly audiobooks allowance – which offers 15 hours of listening time per month – alongside Spotify ‘s existing audiobook catalog.
Free users can purchase individual articles for $1.99 each.
The articles will use a mix of human and digital voice narration, Spotify told TechCrunch , with the portions using AI-generated narration clearly labeled for users.
Spotify says it sees the format as a stepping stone toward audiobook engagement.
> “With Articles, we’re introducing long-form journalism in audio as a natural extension of the music, podcasts, and audiobooks people already come to Spotify for, focused on topics we know they love.” Colleen Prendergast , Spotify Audiobooks
“With Articles, we’re introducing long-form journalism in audio as a natural extension of the music, podcasts, and audiobooks people already come to Spotify for, focused on topics we know they love,” said Colleen Prendergast , Licensing Lead at Spotify Audiobooks .
“By bringing shorter form content into the mix, we’re meeting audiences where they are to help build healthy listening habits, ultimately growing engagement with books over time.”
The company said: “As we have seen with bringing audiences over from podcasts, Articles will allow people to trial shorter, less intimidating listens, opening the gateway to explore longer-form listening like books.”
> “By making Rolling Stone ‘s journalism more accessible on Spotify , we’re excited to bring our storytelling to an even wider audience.” Julian Holguin , Rolling Stone
Julian Holguin , CEO of Rolling Stone , said in a statement: “We’re thrilled to partner with Spotify in what we see as a natural synergy between two platforms that celebrate music and culture.
“This collaboration with Articles allows us to deepen the connection between our readers and the artists, stories, and features they care about, while also providing an opportunity for discovery.
“By making Rolling Stone ‘s journalism more accessible on Spotify , we’re excited to bring our storytelling to an even wider audience.”
The Articles launch is the latest in a wave of non-music initiatives from Spotify , which has been aggressively diversifying its platform in recent years.
Last month, Spotify launched fitness and wellness content through a partnership with Peloton , bringing more than 1,400 workout classes to Premium subscribers.
In podcasting, more than 390 million users had watched a video podcast on the platform as of the company’s Q3 2025 earnings call – a 54% YoY increase – with close to 500,000 video podcast shows available on the service, as previously reported by MBW .
Spotify ‘s audiobook business, which launched in the US in 2022 following the company’s acquisition of audiobook distributor Findaway , has since expanded into 22 markets .
According to Spotify’s Investor Day presentation, audiobook listening hours have grown 60% YoY, with almost half of its audiobook listeners globally under the age of 35
Co-CEO Alex Norström said recently that Spotify has captured roughly 20% of the audiobooks market in the United States – a challenge to Amazon ‘s Audible , which has long dominated the space.
The move into narrated articles puts Spotify in more direct competition with Apple News+ , which has offered professionally narrated audio versions of magazine articles since 2020 .
Apple ‘s audio stories – narrated by professional voice actors – cover many of the same publications now available on Spotify , including Vogue , Vanity Fair , GQ , and WIRED , though they are available only to Apple News+ subscribers.
Spotify , however, can leverage a substantially larger subscriber base. The company reported 293 million Premium subscribers and 761 million total monthly active users as of the end of Q1 2026 , as previously reported by MBW .
Morningstar analyst Matthew Dolgin told Marketplace : “There are things that you can get on Spotify that you can’t get with the others.”
The Articles launch came alongside a burst of announcements from Spotify in recent weeks, including AI-generated podcast creation tools, AI-powered audiobook creation for authors, and a licensing agreement with Universal Music Group enabling fan-made AI covers and remixes.
Spotify ‘s co-CEOs have framed 2026 as the company’s “Year of Raising Ambition” – and narrated magazine articles appear to be part of that strategy. Music Business Worldwide
