The film and television production company was launched by the rapper last year as an expansion of his #Merky brand, and aims to champion British storytelling and create a platform for underrepresented voices.

Today (Tuesday May 12), an Ian Wright biopic has been confirmed, which will tell the story of how the footballer overcame hardships to eventually become Arsenal’s second-top goal scorer and Crystal Palace’s Player of the Century.

It will explore his story as a Black British boy born to first-generation Caribbean immigrants, against a backdrop of a working-class South London community.

“Ian’s journey begins on the Honor Oak Estate in Brockley, south London, where football is the young boy’s only escape from his tough home life,” an official synopsis reads. “Schoolteacher Sydney Pigden recognises Ian’s struggles and dares him to believe in who he could be. Despite this spark of hope, by his teens, Ian’s dreams of becoming a footballer are falling apart as rejection, oppression, and his own internal rage take their toll.”

“By the time he is in his early 20s, Ian’s hope has faded, not least because he strives to be the parent he never had. But with his raw talent finally causing a stir, Ian faces a life-altering choice – risk the only security he has ever known, or take one last shot at the big time,” it adds.

After being rejected by numerous clubs for years as a teen, Wright went on to become a huge name in football – earning 33 caps for England, playing against the likes of Beckham and Zidane, and facing injury setbacks that he battled to overcome.

He retired from football in 2000, and has since become one of the sport’s most revered broadcasters. He was awarded an OBE by Prince William in 2023, has continuously championed the women’s game, and used his platform to raise awareness for the impact on children growing up in domestic violence.

“Telling my story in full for the first time feels surreal and, in some ways, a long time coming. There are parts of my life that will be familiar because they’ve been talked about over the years, but this film is the first time we’re bringing it all together,” Wright said of the new #Merky biopic.

“Retelling my story to Tom [Wilton, who wrote the script] has also made me realise how much Britain has changed from my parents arriving here on the Windrush, what that meant for me and my brothers, and the experiences that will never leave me,” the football icon added. “I hope it shows how complicated life can be for a young person and the influence people around you can have – good and bad.

“My story is one that truly shows how the company you keep can break you down and build you up. There are hard-hitting moments but in the end I want it to give people hope and joy.”

Stormzy and Akua Agyemfra for #Merky Films are on board as executive producers, and other members of the production team include Academy Award nominated producer, Sara McFarlane ( A Love Letter to M) and Stephen Tottingham.

“I’ve worked with Ian for more than 10 years and it’s an honour to be producing his life story,” said Tottingham. “I feel a sense of responsibility to do Wrighty’s life story justice – he’s one of Britain’s most-loved personalities and I can’t think of anyone else with the depth and breadth of his experiences.”

Stormzy added: “It’s a real honour for #Merky Films to be co-producing Ian Wright’s story. Wrighty’s journey goes far beyond football – it’s about resilience, family and believing in yourself against the odds. He’s inspired generations on and off the pitch and we’re so proud to help bring such an important and powerful story to the screen.”

Casting will be done by Carolyn McLeod CDG, CSA and Matt Sheppard – the award-winning team behind BAFTA-nominated independent feature Boiling Point – and more details about the cast, title and release schedule will be announced at a later date.

#Merky Films is an extension of the overarching community initiative and brand from Stormzy, which stems back a decade. It includes the highly-praised #Merky Football Careers partnership, which the artist first established in 2022 as a way to address racial equity in the football industry and provide opportunities for UK Black Heritage Youth to access jobs in the sector.

Since its launch, the initiative has added over 60 roles to the UK football industry for young people of UK Black Heritage, and in 2024 it joined forces with Adidas to unveil an online platform dedicated to developing a wider community for those who have applied for roles.

Before then, Stormzy and co. announced a new centre in London for music, football and gaming, called #MerkyFC HQ , an award-winning publishing imprint called #Merky Books –  which was expanded into a two-day literature festival .

On top of that, in 2021, the London grime icon also announced plans to support 30 more students through studies at Cambridge University through his scholarship scheme . It came as part of a partnership between Stormzy’s #Merky Foundation and the bank HSBC, and saw 10 students per year receive a £20,000 annual scholarship to cover tuition fees and maintenance costs.

He then brought the university initiative back in 2023, pledging to fund 36 more black Cambridge students over the following three years.
