Dennis Leroy Kangalee’s new play THE HARM has been announced as a featured selection of the 2026 Midtown International Theatre Festival season.

The production will be presented this summer at American Theatre of Actors as part of the festival’s return following a nearly decade-long hiatus.

Described as a four-character drama set in a college classroom, THE HARM examines media, race, language, power, and perception through a confrontation that escalates into what the production describes as “a profound crisis of perception and accusation.”

According to festival organizers, the play explores the relationship between intention, interpretation, and the ways language can shape personal and public realities.

“Dennis Leroy Kangalee has crafted a work that vibrates with the nervous energy of our current cultural moment,” the MITF executive team said in a statement. “Having The Harm as a featured production in our comeback season aligns perfectly with the festival's mission of presenting bold, intellectually rigorous theatre that isn't afraid to ask the hardest questions.”

The revival of the Midtown International Theatre Festival coincides with the 50th anniversary season of the American Theatre of Actors. Founded by John Chatterton and executive produced in partnership with Jay Michaels and the ATA, the festival will utilize all three theaters within the ATA complex in Hell’s Kitchen from June 15 through July 26, 2026.

Known as the “Festival Giant,” the Midtown International Theatre Festival has historically focused on independent theater productions, including world premieres, musicals, and international works.

The Midtown International Theatre Festival will return in 2026 after nearly ten years away from the New York theater scene. The festival will run from June 15 through July 26, 2026 across the full American Theatre of Actors complex.
