The Thermals Announce New Album
After a decade, The Thermals return with "Under the Crushing Rain," an album Hutch Harris made "quickly, and by myself," harkening back to the project's origins. "Spirit Collectors" is available now.
The Thermals are back, announcing their first album in 10 years, Under the Crushing Rain . With the effort due September 4th via Hutch Harris’ Static Catsup Aspic label, lead single “Spirit Collectors” can be streamed below.
Marking the project’s first record since 2016’s fittingly titled We Disappear , Under the Crushing Rain returns The Thermals to its solo roots. Harris wrote and recorded the songs in his Brainwash studio “quickly, and by myself” in an attempt to recreate the “fast, cheap, and totally in control” spirit of The Thermals’ More Parts Per Million debut. For those asking about longtime The Thermals bandmate Kathy Foster, Harris added: “I kindly answer ‘SHE’S RIGHT HERE, sitting next to me working hard on the layout for the LP, as I write this.’ Not only did I have Kathy’s blessing to make a Thermals LP, I had her help as well.”
Elsewhere in his press statement, Harris said that while he had released a trio of solo albums and a number of singles since disbanding The Thermals, he’d come to miss “the noise, the nerves and the chaos that the band always embodied. The exuberance, the raw power, and the punctuality! The bottom line is I love The Thermals, and I love making Thermals records.”

The track is a punchy and crunchy number warding off the demons of its title, which Harris describes as “the evil fiends without arts of their own; lacking love and talent and with no drive to create life, their quest is only to steal from you everything for which you have worked so hard.”
