Theater Latté Da has announced the productions and key creative team members for its 2026-27 season. Latté Da will launch a slate of productions reflecting the organization's commitment to producing new and boldly re-imagined music theater and creating exceptional arts experiences for Minnesota audiences. This season will feature a powerful Latté Da commissioned world premiere, in addition to the Midwest premiere of a new indie-rock musical and the re-kindling of a significant local partnership. “This season reflects our ongoing commitment to work that is emotionally immediate, theatrically adventurous and deeply engaged with the world around us,” states Latté Da Artistic Director, Justin Lucero. “Whether through laughter, intimacy or confrontation, each piece creates space for empathy and asks audiences to imagine a more expansive future together. This season's productions were chosen not only for their artistry, but for the conversations they invite us to have right now.”
September 16 – October 19, 2026
The season opens with the haunting, critically acclaimed play INDECENT by Paula Vogel , with original music and score by Lisa Gutkin & Aaron Halva , direction by Pirronne Yousefzadeh and music direction by Spencer Chandler .
A play about a play—and the artists who risked everything to tell it; inspired by the true story of Sholem Asch 's seminal Yiddish work, God of Vengeance, and its infamous 1923 obscenity trial, INDECENT is a klezmer-infused play with music that traces the turbulent journey of a troupe determined to stage a work deemed “indecent.” As their story unfolds across continents and decades, so too does a powerful meditation on censorship, nationalism and the policing of queer love. At once tender and thunderously relevant, this breathtaking theatrical experience shines a light on the enduring struggle between artistic expression and societal control. In a moment when questions of whose stories are “acceptable” feel increasingly urgent, INDECENT invites us to bear witness to the courage of artists, the cost of silence and the unshakable power of theater itself.

During the holiday season, Theater Latté Da celebrates the long-awaited return of a Twin Cities favorite, ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914, featuring direction by Latté Da co-founder Peter Rothstein . Written by Rothstein, the production also features vocal arrangements by Erick Lichte & Timothy C. Takach, and music direction by Lara Bolton.
ALL IS CALM brings founding artistic director Peter Rothstein home to direct this unforgettable, music-driven act of remembrance—one that has moved audiences for almost two decades with its quiet power and authenticity. On a cold Christmas Eve along the Western Front, as soldiers sat on opposite sides of the battlefield, something extraordinary happened. The guns fell silent. Emerging into no-man's-land, enemies met not with violence, but with song. Drawn from letters, diaries and firsthand accounts, this profoundly moving piece is told through stirring a cappella harmonies that illuminate a fleeting moment of shared humanity in the midst of war. In a world that feels increasingly polarized and entrenched, this story of soldiers stepping out of their trenches to sing together offers not naïve sentimentality, but radical empathy and an invitation to rediscover the light that can emerge even in the darkest of times.
February 3-28, 2027
The new year will bring the Midwest Premiere of LIZARD BOY to Twin Cities audiences, with book, music & lyrics by Justin Huertas , direction by Joey Miller and music direction by Isabella Dawis.
An indie-rock musical like you've never seen before! In this Midwest Premiere, LIZARD BOY bursts onto the stage as a funny, quirky, and deeply heartfelt coming-of-age story about a reluctant hero learning to embrace what makes him different. Trevor has spent years hiding in the shadows to conceal his scaly green skin... until one extraordinary day forces him to step into the spotlight and decide if he has the courage to save the world… and his new crush. With a genre-blending indie-rock score and the pulse of a live concert, this three-person chamber musical transforms comic book mythology into something intimate, offbeat and electrifying. Winner of six Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards and three Drama Desk Award nominations, LIZARD BOY is a wonder-filled journey of queer identity and self-acceptance that reminds us that you don't need a cape to be a hero. Sometimes, what sets you apart is a superpower.
March 31 - May 2, 2027
In the spring, Latté Da's world premiere production, SHE'S COME UNDONE, takes center stage and furthers their tradition of developing bold new work; based on the novel by Wally Lamb, with music & lyrics by Michael Holland , book by Darrah Cloud & David Simpatico , and directed by Justin Lucero.
A powerful new musical born at Latté Da, from the acclaimed team behind 2022 hit TWELVE ANGRY MEN: A NEW MUSICAL. SHE'S COME UNDONE takes to the musical stage as a sweeping, deeply human coming-of-age story about a young woman navigating shame, body image, trauma and ultimately self-forgiveness. Adapted from Wally Lamb's #1 New York Times bestselling novel, this world premiere musical brings together a team of artists known for balancing muscular storytelling with emotional intimacy to create a work that is as psychologically rich as it is theatrically bold. At once intimate and expansive, this ambitious new musical invites us into the fragile landscape of a life in progress, charting Dolores Price's deeply human journey through pain, resilience, and the long, uneven path toward healing. A story of loss that ultimately blossoms into the quiet, hard-won grace of family found.
Dates TBA
Latté Da's 29th Season will close with the beautifully devastating SPRING AWAKENING, presented in collaboration with the University of Minnesota. Based on the play by Frank Wedekind , the musical's book & lyrics are written by Steven Sater , with music by Duncan Sheik , music direction by Jason Hansen, and direction by Justin Lucero.
Fifteen years after a landmark collaboration, Latté Da reunites with the University of Minnesota for a bold new production of this groundbreaking, Tony Award–winning musical. SPRING AWAKENING stands as a defining work of 21st-century musical theater, an electrifying, unflinching examination of adolescence in a world shaped by repression, misinformation and fear. Set within a society determined to keep young people in the dark, a group of teenagers collides with desire, curiosity and consequence—beautiful, devastating and irreversible. Fueled by a thrilling contemporary rock score, SPRING AWAKENING pulses with urgency, capturing the volatility of youth on the brink of transformation. Veteran Latté Da artists and the newest generation of Minnesota talent come together to close the season with rebellion, resonance and wonder.
