( Subscribe here! ) We’re looking at all the new and recent releases from Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, HBO Max, and more for ideas — not to mention a Blast From the Past and streaming recommendations from this week’s special guest: Widow’s Bay composer David Fleming!
This Week’s Picks
They Will Kill You (Film)
They Will Kill You (New Line Cinema)
Directed by: Kirill Sokolov
Cast: Zazie Beetz, Myha’la, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, Patricia Arquette
Streaming on: HBO Max
Sometimes, all a soul really wants to do on a Friday night is watch an ultra-violent horror-comedy mashup ( a really hard genre to get right ). Bonus points if it includes an eclectic but fun cast led by the always fantastic Zazie Beetz. They Will Kill You bears its similarities to movies like the Ready or Not duology, but creates its own bananagrams mythology and rules (if you don’t think something makes sense, just give it a minute, because eventually it’ll get explained). It’s also a movie packed with exceptionally clever action, unexpected twists, and a few wonderfully goofy choices — seriously, this one’s a wild-ass ride.
R.J. Decker (TV)

R.J. Decker (ABC)
Created by: Robert Doherty
Cast: Scott Speedman, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens, Bevin Bru
Streaming on: Hulu
I am admittedly a latecomer to this breezy ABC series about a private investigator with a good heart and a camera, but now R.J. Decker is my friend and I would enjoy hanging out with him sometime. The show features a nice mix of crime procedural and Florida dirtbag antics (there is in fact a whole running thing about the “Florida man” phenomenon), and the cast works well: Scott Speedman has aged like a fine wine, and Kevin Rankin, Jaina Lee Ortiz, and Adelaide Clemens all spark off him nicely. It’s a real tribute to the novel by Carl Hiaasen (on which the show is based) — Hiaasen being the king of Florida comic noir.

I Am Frankelda (Film)
I Am Frankelda (Netflix)
Directed by: Arturo and Roy Ambriz
Cast: Mireya Mendoza, Arturo Mercado Jr., Luis Leonardo Suárez
Streaming on: Netflix
This charming stop-motion animated film (the first of its type produced in Mexico!) is actually a prequel for the animated series Frankelda’s Book of Spooks , one season of which is streaming on HBO Max now. But it works well as a stand-alone narrative, following the journey of a 19th-century girl who dreams of writing horror stories — stories that turn out to be more real than she realizes. There’s a clever meta-narrative going on here about the nature of storytelling, and the character design and animation are all quite charming; Guillermo del Toro was a mentor to the Ambriz brothers on this, and you can feel his influence.
What It Feels Like for a Girl (TV)
What It Feels Like for a Girl (Prime Video)
Created by: Paris Lees
Cast: Ellis Howard, Laura Haddock, Hannah Walters, Michael Socha, Laquarn Lewis, Hannah Jones, Adam Ali, Alex Thomas-Smith, Calam Lynch, Jake Dunn, Dickie Beau, Emma Shipp, Laura Checkley
Streaming on: Prime Video
Madonna released the song “What It Feels Like for a Girl” in 2000, which happens to be when this British drama about a trans person’s coming of age starts. It’s the beginning of the millennium, and young Byron (Ellis Howard) is seeking escape from their small town existence — and, ideally, acceptance into a community that actually understands them. Based on the memoir by creator Paris Lees, there’s a raw quality to the show that helps it stand apart from more romanticized narratives about this time and subject matter; most importantly, whatever setbacks and tragedies Byron faces, their spirit endures. Oh, and this show is a rich feast of club music from the era.

Blast From the Past
The home screens of streaming services are always packed with the latest new releases, but we don’t spend enough time appreciating how much good library content is streaming across all of these platforms. Each week, Stream On will spotlight one less-than-new favorite (must pre-date the founding of Consequence, so 15 years or older) that deserves attention from modern-day eyes.
Shaolin Soccer (Film)
Shaolin Soccer (Miramax)
Directed by: Stephen Chow
Cast: Stephen Chow, Zhao Wei, Ng Man-tat, Patrick Tse
Streaming on: Paramount+, Kanopy, Tubi
Happy World Cup kickoff! To celebrate, why not visit (or revisit) one of the most purely enjoyable sports movies ever made? Stephen Chow’s sensibility as a director can best be described as “live action Looney Tunes” (complimentary), and this story about a team of scrappy underdogs training to compete against a team literally known as Team Evil is full of light-hearted charm and silly moments. Sometimes when CGI looks unreal, it can be annoying. But in the case of Shaolin Soccer , it’s a feature, not a bug.
A Special Guest Recommends!
Liz isn’t the only person in the world capable of suggesting stuff for people to watch… So each week, Stream On will now feature picks from a special guest! Said special guest could be literally anyone from the world of entertainment — actors, writers, directors, musicians, or anyone else Liz thinks might be watching something interesting.

This Week: David Fleming!

Who Are They? Widow’s Bay fans, this one’s for you! Composer David Fleming has made music for a wide range of movies and films, including the documentary Jim Henson Idea Man , James Gunn’s Superman , and Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith . Right now, you’re enjoying his sometimes chilling, sometimes whimsical score each week on the hit Apple TV horror-comedy series (hint hint, Emmys voters). Those who watch Widow’s Bay know how tricky a tightrope that show walks in terms of its tone, and David’s work is a huge aspect of making it sing. Congrats to him and the rest of the team on the show’s Season 2 renewal!
What Do They Recommend? David has a collection of picks that truly represent his eclectic filmography:
Suspiria ( Prime Video ): Luca Guadagnino’s remake clears the extremely high bar set by the original (including its iconic score by Goblin). Might be my favorite horror film in recent years. You’ll never look at modern dance the same way again.
My Neighbor Totoro ( HBO Max): My son recently discovered this, and we’ve both been totally captivated by it. Beautifully made – for a “kids movie” it really moves at its own tempo and has a quiet, haunting quality. Joe Hisashi’s “The Path of the Wind” theme is gorgeous.

Black Bag ( Prime Video ): Steven Soderbergh is hard to beat. This film perfectly captures his ability to match pure entertainment with elegant style and high-art class.
Possession (1981, Criterion): A relatively vintage horror film that I only recently watched and it truly, deeply disturbed me. Worst date movie ever.
Thank you so much to David for these picks! The season finale of Widow’s Bay debuts Wednesday, June 17th.
One Last One Before Bed
Finally, let’s spotlight a movie or TV show that’s not only great, but won’t take up too much of your time: Think of this section as the answer to the question “What’s something I can watch before hitting the hay, that won’t keep me up too late?” The only rule is that it has to be less than 95 minutes if it’s a movie, or less than 30 minutes an episode if it’s a TV show. Otherwise, sky’s the limit!
Before Sunset (Film)
Before Sunset (Warner Independent Pictures)
Directed by: Richard Linklater
Cast: Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke
Streaming on: Tubi, The Roku Channel
It’s summer, I’m not in Paris, and that’s a huge bummer. At least there are movies like this Richard Linklater classic, a rambling thing of beauty enhanced by its prequel and sequel, but also still a treat on its own. Maybe one of the best movie endings ever? What am I saying, no maybe about it. Before Sunset is simply perfection.
We’ll be back next week with more picks — in the meantime, stay safe out there, or better yet stay inside, where it’s definitely safe, and there’s so much film and TV to watch. Be sure to subscribe to the newsletter !
