In a Ministerial Statement delivered by the Chancellor on 21 May 2026, the government confirmed that the rate of VAT applied to qualifying supplies would be cut from the standard 20% to 5%. The reduced rate will be in effect from 25 June 2026 to 1 September 2026 inclusive, and will be introduced by statutory instrument.

For the theatre industry, the relief covers children's admission tickets to theatrical performances, shows, concerts, cinema screenings, and exhibitions. According to guidance published by HM Revenue and Customs, a qualifying children's ticket is one that is "held out for sale only as a right of admission for a child," based on how it is marketed, priced, and presented by the supplier.

Family ticket packages will also benefit from the reduced rate. Where a ticket is sold as a family admission that includes at least one child, the entire package, including any adult admissions bundled within it, will qualify for the 5% rate. A family ticket priced as a single package for two adults and two children, for example, would be eligible in full.

Standalone adult tickets sold separately will remain subject to the standard 20% VAT rate. Group or multi-person tickets that are not specifically marketed as family admissions will also fall outside the scope of the relief.

The reduced rate does not extend to goods or services sold separately at venues, such as concessions, programmes, or merchandise, which will continue to be taxed at their normal rates. Admissions that are already exempt from VAT under the existing cultural exemption, such as those supplied by qualifying charities, are unaffected by the change.

For tickets purchased in advance, the reduced rate will apply to admissions on dates falling between 25 June and 1 September 2026. Tickets bought during the relief window for performances on or after 2 September 2026 will remain subject to the standard rate. Where customers have prepaid at the higher rate for performances now covered by the relief, the government has indicated that refunds for the difference in VAT would be expected.

The measure is one element of a broader temporary VAT reduction that also covers children's restaurant meals and admission to a range of family attractions, including museums, zoos, theme parks, and soft play centres.
