Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute has announced that the Dance Parade New York will include a performance by the New York Butoh Institute as part of its 20th annual celebration on May 16, 2026.
The parade will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:45 a.m. at West 17th Street and Sixth Avenue, followed by a procession starting at 12:00 p.m. along the Avenue of the Americas. Organizers expect more than 10,000 dancers representing over 100 styles of dance to participate in the event, which will culminate in a festival at Tompkins Square Park.
The New York Butoh Institute’s performance will be choreographed by Yazmin Gonzalez and will feature a company of dancers including Genevieve Jencson, Robyn Wong, Eilish Henderson, Celeste Laborde, Eric Lichtenstein, Zo Roze, Suyi Xu, Ana Gimena Sanchez, Alex Shanahan, River Luna , Rute Ventura, Alaisha Sharma, Alana Rosa, and Stephanie Larriere.
Gonzalez, who began her dance training in Egyptian Classical Belly Dance before transitioning into fusion and Butoh, has developed a movement style that combines Middle Eastern dance, improvisation, and Butoh. She has presented work at events including the New York Butoh Institute Festival and Queer Butoh Festival, and previously directed the company’s participation in the 2025 NYC Dance Parade.
The New York Butoh Institute is led by Vangeline, a choreographer and educator whose work centers on the contemporary evolution of Japanese Butoh. Through Vangeline Theater, she has created performance works and initiatives including the New York Butoh Institute Festival and Queer Butoh, and has led programs such as the Dream a Dream Project, which brings Butoh into correctional facilities across New York State.
Following the parade, the DanceFest in Tompkins Square Park will feature performances across multiple stages, site-specific works, free dance classes, and a dance party area with DJs. The festival is designed as an interactive celebration, inviting audiences to engage directly with a wide range of dance forms.
