Verdi maintained a lifelong fascination with the works of William Shakespeare . Macbeth, composed relatively early in his career, marked his first major engagement with the playwright’s world, transforming the dark tale of ambition, murder, and guilt into one of opera’s most compelling dramas.
The story follows Macbeth, a nobleman who seizes power through the murder of King Duncan, only to find himself tormented by guilt and paranoia. At his side is the relentless Lady Macbeth, whose ambition drives the couple ever deeper into violence and destruction. Verdi’s score captures both the psychological torment and mounting catastrophe of the tragedy, culminating in Lady Macbeth’s descent into madness as she attempts to wash away imagined bloodstains from her hands.
The production, directed by acclaimed Australian director Benedict Andrews , first premiered in 2013 and returns with its stark and uncompromising vision. Andrews places the destructive relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth at the center of the drama, while set designer Ashley Martin-Davis creates a world that is simultaneously seductive and brutal. Costume Designer Victoria Behr further enhances the production’s nightmarish atmosphere.
This season’s performances also mark a significant milestone for Royal Danish Opera soloist Jens Søndergaard, who celebrates his 25th stage anniversary with his role debut as Macbeth. Opposite him, soprano Marigona Qerkezi returns to the company following her acclaimed performance in Tosca last season to take on the challenging role of Lady Macbeth.
Performed in Italian with Danish and English surtitles, Macbeth is recommended for audiences aged 13 and older. Tickets are now available, with prices ranging from 190 to 1,105 DKK, including service fees.
Macbeth will be performed September 5–26, 2026, at The Opera House’s Main Stage.
